Permission Issue Ubuntu 16.04

I have rebuilt my computer and installed 16.04. Was 14.04. There has been a change in permission behaviour. I have a Windows 10 computer that I use for my photography and Photoshop. I copy and paste folders over the network to my Linux machine for backup and using on my web sites. I did this today and the folders and files were all created with all permissions set to "nobody". They are created in a folder my user owns. The Windows username is the same as my Ubuntu username. In the past the copied folders and folders received my user ownership. I want to return to this behaviour. Reviewing documentation I see "big" solutions. Create users to my group. Test if this will work. Fingers crossed. Did not have to do this before. Can someone help with an easier solution? Thank you. -- Stephen

Ubuntu 16.04 File Manager With Tabs

I had the system hard drive fail, and installed 16.04. I am getting used to it. But the default file manger does not allow tabs with different directories. Am I missing something, or has this feature indeed been removed. Now I was using a Gnome shell before. Reverting is a consideration. But if anyone can recommend a good file manager with tabs, please do so. -- Stephen

thinkpad repair; or, new laptop

My THinkpad T440s is having some serious issues with suspend -- at times it will enter a hard freeze while suspended, requiring a hard reset with the manual reset button; at times it won't suspend at all, but enter a similarly unresponsive, blank-screen state from which it cannot be accessesd, requiring a soft reset with the power button; and at other times it will suspend just fine. 1) I suppose this could be at least partly a software problem. Anyone know what logs I should look in? I'm running Gnome on Arch, so it's a systemd system. 2) I suspect this is atl east partly a hardware problem. My warranty is expired. Is there a decent thinkpad repair place that might be able to diagnose this issue? 3) if I can't fix this, I will be getting a new laptop shortly. It would be nice if I could use my new m2 drive (which is currently in an LVM together with the primary SSD from the thinkpad, but I'd hate to lose it entirely as it wasn't cheap). The Thinkpad T460 looks like it will end up costing about $2000. I'd like to get a linux-compatible machine with a nice keyboard, but pay a bit less than that if I can (it's only been a couple of years since I bought the last one!). Any suggestions? THe keyboard has always been the killer feature that keeps me with Thinkpad, but maybe things have gotten better in the last little while? Thanks as always! Matt

Routing and/or Proxying

I think I'm having trouble finding an answer to my questions largely because I don't fully know how to express them, so I'm going to try to do so here and see if another member of this list can take my English language fuzzy logic and turn it into question(s) that can more easily be answered ... I'm running application servers that have to make queries to servers behind a firewall. The firewall (not in my control) has to be configured to admit IP addresses. Getting addresses added to the firewall can be slow. So it seems to me the best way to do this would be to set up a couple of proxy servers with fixed/known IPs so that the application servers (fluctuating headcount and IPs) could make their requests through the proxy servers - which are known to the firewall. This makes sense in my head so far. But here's the problem: I'd like to send all network traffic from the application servers through the proxy servers, regardless of content, port, destination, anything. But in saying that, it begins to sound more like "routing" than "proxying", and enforcing this seems like it might be tricky on the open internet. And authentication of some sort would seem to be needed to prevent bad actors using the proxy to access stuff behind the firewall. A VPN is a possibility, but not one I'm enthusiastic about: I tackled OpenVPN a few months back, and after a day and a half and very little progress my brains started to slide out my ears. Setting up a VM host

If I wanted to set up a host for a bunch of headless VMs, what's the OS/Hypervisor to run these days? I'm doing this out of curiosity and for testing purposes. I don't exactly have appropriate hardware - an i5 with 16GB of memory - but it should be sufficient to run 5-10 VMs for my very limited purposes (private network, none of the VMs will be public-facing). QEMU/KVM looks like the best choice for a FOSS advocate? Other recommendations? I could particularly use a good HOWTO or tutorial if anyone knows of one.
