Portable Backup Drive Compatible with Linux (and Recommended Backup Software)

Hello! I am in the market for a new portable hard drive in order back up my files on my Linux system (running Mageia 5.1). My requirements are: - Reliable - Portable - Price Under $100 - at least 500 GB in size - USB-powered (I don't want to have to deal with plugging it in) - no additional software included (an empty file system without having to immediately reformat the drive if possible) - Fast file transfer and retrieval rates (SSD with USB 3.0?) In addition, I'd like some recommendations regarding good Linux-based back-up software. I've looked at luckyBackup (http://luckybackup.sourceforge.net/) based on some articles I've read but I know this group probably has some well-tested applications they prefer. Scott, Chris, Matthew, Brian and others: I wanted to put everyone in contact with each other that was discussing the possibility of Flock in Canada (Toronto). I think there are two potential hurdles: 1) Finding enough man power in the Toronto area to make organizing the event possible, 2) Finding the right 'location' for holding the event. I am hoping this group can discuss the details a bit further on the FLOCK mailing list, but wanted to ensure everyone had some direct contact as well. Charles

It's going to be truly more valuable to get peoples' impressions. Even if their impressions are wrong, that will be somewhat informative. Guiding their *wrong* impressions is still useful. -- When confronted by a difficult problem, solve it by reducing it to the question, "How would the Lone Ranger handle this?"

Router advice sought

So my WRT-350N decided to stop being a router last night and to start being a brick instead. All ports and WiFi appear to be dead. People have discussed the latest and greatest here - so what's the best basic router for: * enough wireless range for a smallish two storey house; * able to connect and configure about 15 wireless clients and 4 wired (one wired in a DMZ) * probably going to stick with stock firmware, as the Linksys one on the WRT-350N was pretty much okay for the last 8 years; and * would be nice if it wasn't unholy expensive, was available retail today, and was likely to last at least another 8 years. My network setup is very simple: just internal IPs assigned by MAC address via DHCP, and locked in the router. Yes, I manually copy /etc/hosts files about: don't judge. It worked fine until the router went kablooie. I'm wondering if I even need a router, though. The Sagemcom box from Teksavvy (rented from Bell) has WiFi and four LAN ports. What does having my own router do for me? Recommendations and advice welcomed. Assume I have no idea what I'm doing if you haven't already. Thanks in advance Stewart
