[apologies if this was double-posted -- I has originally sent this from a non-subscribed address ] Hi all, The (GTA-based) Linux Professional Institute is doing beta testing on new exams for its second-level two certification. Testing is going on in Toronto, and participants (who can pass the exams) may achieve their LPIC-2 certification free of charge. GTALUG Board Elections

GTALUG's Annual General Meeting is coming up on 11 October 2016 which means we will be hainvg an election for board members. To vote you will need to be a member of the GTALUG Organisation which costs $20 for the year (this helps cover the cost of running the server for the mailing list and website). This year there are three openings on the board. If you are interested in helping GTALUG become even more awesome then you should definitly run. Just show up to the Annual Genreal Meeting (on 11 October 2016 at 7:30 p.m.), nominate yourself, and ask for someone to second your nomination. The requirments for being a board memeber are: * You have to be at least eighteen years old. * You have to be a member of GTALUG (or become one within ten days of getting elected). * The abliity to somewhat regularly attend GTALUG board meetings (this year were held on the forth Monday of the month at HackLab.TO (1266 Queen St. West)). Interesting article on a new grep written in Rust

http://blog.burntsushi.net/ripgrep/ This takes me well back in time; we had a talk back in 2006 ( https://github.com/gtalug/legacy-wiki-extract/blob/master/legacy-pages-proc… ) talking about the state of the art at that time. The issues that were discussed at that point tended to be about whether you'd want your "grep" to expand regular expressions or leave them dynamic. The state of things have certainly changed since then. I have often tended to use, for repository-oriented searches, ack-grep (a recursive grep implemented in Perl), and was aware of The Silver Searcher; I'm giving ripgrep a good try as alternative based on how interesting the blog entry was. The new state of affairs are that we still have "Ol reliable," but there are a pretty substantial set of newer options. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- what tools are we benchmarking? ripgrep (rg) (v0.1.2) - You’ve heard enough about this one already. GNU grep (v2.25) - Ol’ reliable. git grep (v2.7.4) - Like grep, but built into git. Only works well in git repositories. The Silver Searcher (ag) (commit cda635, using PCRE 8.38) - Like ack, but written in C and much faster. Reads your .gitignore files just like ripgrep. Universal Code Grep (ucg) (commit 487bfb, using PCRE 10.21 with the JIT enabled) - Also like ack but written in C++, and only searches files from a whitelist, and doesn’t support reading .gitignore. The Platinum Searcher (pt) (commit 509368) - Written in Go and does support .gitignore files. sift (commit 2d175c) - Written in Go and supports .gitignore files with an optional flag, but generally prefers searching everything (unlike every other tool in this list except for grep). ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- FYI, the Rust language project was founded by Graydon Hoare, who used to be in Toronto, once upon a time... -- When confronted by a difficult problem, solve it by reducing it to the question, "How would the Lone Ranger handle this?"

Permission Issue Ubuntu 16.04

**Apologies I had screenshot attachments on the first try. Message too big.** I have rebuilt my computer and installed 16.04. Was 14.04. There has been a change in permission behaviour. I have a Windows 10 computer that I use for my photography and Photoshop. I copy and paste folders over the network to my Linux machine for backup and using on my web sites. I did this today and the folders and files were all created with all permissions set to "nobody". They are created in a folder my user owns. The Windows username is the same as my Ubuntu username. In the past the copied folders and folders received my user ownership. I want to return to this behaviour. Reviewing documentation I see "big" solutions. Create users to my group. Test if this will work. Fingers crossed. Did not have to do this before. Can someone help with an easier solution? Thank you. -- Stephen

Hi William I have a couple of lenovo's that are better than that and I am not impressed. In my opinion, it is too much money for what you get. Obviously it is great for social media, etc and portability. Good luck.
