I like to tinker with stuff and this is also a kind of semi-long, maybe even funny story. I am asked quite often to help people with Android problems so I fool around with phones, usually theirs not mine. I did get to like Motorola enough to buy a Moto G and use it. A couple of months ago I was looking through ebay and saw an ad for an Unlocked Moto X and assuming they meant carrier unlocked, I ordered it. When it arrived after the estimated delivery date, I charged it and inserted my sim and no joy, it was locked to Verizon. I opened a trouble ticket and tried to get the seller to provide me with an unlock code but they couldn't. I guess because there isn't one. Ebay has refunded me and I guess the seller settled with them for false advertising because I am now in possession of a semi-borked Moto XT1060. (Looking at CRdroid at this point) I say semi-borked because after I rebooted without the sim, all sorts of gremlins showed up. Most especially what I believe is a Verizon "ghost" carrier induced BSOD. After a couple of intermittent hours of booting and fuzzing, I got enough of a screen to be able to navigate to settings, enable developer mode and force GPU rendering and disable HW overlays. Now I can actually use the thing on wifi. It still takes a lot of keypresses and screen taps to fuzz the thing on, but once I got the screen on, I was able to generate a bug report and mail it to myself. It also sent me a screen-shot of the screen I couldn't see at the time. At first foray I was operating in the very narrow space at the top of the screen, which I kept alive by dragging my finger down from the top and pressing the power button repeatedly to force a redraw of the screen. I now know, after getting the report, my phone thinks it is 10.24PM, Monday February 13th. Actually it looks like the bloatware deliberatly overheats the cpu and so far, as long as I keep the phone in the cold space between my windows, it seems to function almost normally, except it won't accept the sim card. So it seems the boot loader is locked at NAND: 0x30BE. Has anyone on the list had success in flashing an open source boot loader to a Motorola device? I've looked around a bit and the ghost rom is available but I can't seem to find a comparable stock motorola rom for this model. Any advice is appreciated and here's a couple hundred lines of debug code for anyone who is interested. Intel Baytrail systems may become stable under Linux!

For two years, Intel Baytrail processors have been hanging under Linux. Baytrail is a generation of Atom processors and includes many low-end processors that I think of as Atoms but are called things like Pentium and Celeron. But not all Pentium and Celeron processors. <http://ark.intel.com/products/codename/55844/Bay-Trail> The bug report is <https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=109051> but started elsewhere. A few days ago, entry 724 (!) in that bug report noted the submission of a kernel patch that strongly reduces the problem. The thread for the patch is interesting: <https://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/intel-gfx/2017-January/117932.html> - the fix doesn't fix all the underlying problems but very significantly improves stability. Perhaps to the point that the instability fades into the background noise of crashes. - the fix slightly cripples power management on these systems but much less than the only known work-around (preventing the use of cstates higher than 1) - this may slow down the search for residual bugs, but how can it be slower than the current process has been? - The fix was already in the kernel for Cherryview processors. I'm not sure what those are: it certainly includes Cherry Trail processors. <http://ark.intel.com/products/codename/46629/Cherry-Trail> - the bug started to become visible in Linux 3.17-rc1 and should be ameliorated in 4.11. What a long horrible run. Most of the life of the chips! I have a number of Atom systems that I never got around to Linuxifying due to fear of this bug and, for some, annoyance with 32-bit UEFI firmware. I will say that I've had a great experience with a netbook with a Celeron N2840 (Baytrail). Perhaps because I don't often play video content with it. Some of these Baytrail systems are still a nightmare for Linux due to non-systematic and undocumented connection of the SoCs to the peripheral circuits. It's not often I have to assemble larger numbered documents. I usually use this little script. enscript -L1 -F --header-font=Times-Roman12 -b '||$%' -o- < <(for i in $(seq "$(pdftk "$1" dump_data | grep "Num" | cut -d":" -f2)"); do echo; done) | ps2pdf - | pdftk "$1" multistamp - output "${1%.pdf}-numbered.pdf" I tried it on this .. Linux HECTOR 3.16.0-4-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 3.16.36-1+deb8u2 (2016-10-19) x86_64 GNU/Linux and got this .. seq: invalid floating point argument: 162 162 pages with no numbers. Portable Backup Drive Compatible with Linux (and Recommended Backup Software)

Hello! I am in the market for a new portable hard drive in order back up my files on my Linux system (running Mageia 5.1). My requirements are: - Reliable - Portable - Price Under $100 - at least 500 GB in size - USB-powered (I don't want to have to deal with plugging it in) - no additional software included (an empty file system without having to immediately reformat the drive if possible) - Fast file transfer and retrieval rates (SSD with USB 3.0?) In addition, I'd like some recommendations regarding good Linux-based back-up software. I've looked at luckyBackup (http://luckybackup.sourceforge.net/) based on some articles I've read but I know this group probably has some well-tested applications they prefer. FLOCK - Canada - Toronto 2017

Scott, Chris, Matthew, Brian and others: I wanted to put everyone in contact with each other that was discussing the possibility of Flock in Canada (Toronto). I think there are two potential hurdles: 1) Finding enough man power in the Toronto area to make organizing the event possible, 2) Finding the right 'location' for holding the event.
