Greetings Many companies are now developing equipment for home use that is for the latest buzz in the world - - IoT (more morons them!). There is, as a result, the need to be searching for a cell phone signal (a wireless section that can only be put in airplane mode not an off). This machine behavior has me very concerned about my personal information security. Any suggestions on how to 'shut off' wireless services on a machine that doesn't really have too much in the way for access? (Only access that I can see is through the memory card but that only has data loaded no system information - - - no other visible ports. Any ideas for hacks to disable this wireless module will be gratefully accepted. (I do need the machine to work though so no - - - sledge hammers aren't an option!!! Have thought of using a farady cage but am not sure if that's going to be sufficient.) Regards Dee

I just did a bit of updating of the wiki <https://wiki.gtalug.org/pre-meeting_dinner> ; we need to see about what sort of option to take... I'm thinking z-teca, 66 Gerrard E, but certainly would be happy to entertain strong opinions otherwise. -- When confronted by a difficult problem, solve it by reducing it to the question, "How would the Lone Ranger handle this?"

git - push and pull attached to different remotes?

This isn't strictly a Linux question, but this list is a great knowledge base and I know a lot of you use git. Usually on Linux. :-) I've written a Python program that checks all of your repositories to see if they're up-to-date with your remotes. But given the flexibility of git - and the output of 'git remote show origin' which shows separate URLs for "Fetch" and "Push" - it's occurred to me that it's probably NOT safe to assume that the Fetch and Push URLs are the same. deal for Brother printer

Background: I have a Brother DCP7065DN: - laser printer, "duplex" (can print on both sides of paper) - scanner (flatbed + sheet feeder (single-sided)) - (wired) networking (or USB) It works pretty well BUT the printer is a "GDI" printer and thus requires proprietary drivers. Luckilly Brother supports Linux, but it is annoying having to install the drivers on each machine that will access the printer. The deal: <http://forums.redflagdeals.com/brother-ca-brother-ca-refurbished-b-w-laser-…> Brother sells refurbished units online at a good price - free shipping for purchases over $50 - good warranty even though refurbished - if you sign up for their newsletter, you get a 25% off coupon that works for refurbished items even though it is not supposed to. This disappears the end of June 1. Be careful, some of the printers on offer are GDI and some have PCL6 and PostScript emulation. You can find out from the "full feature list" for the printer. Look for "emulations". In my modest experience with older Brothers, using PCL6 is best since most of the hard rendering work would be done by the computer rather than the printer and my computers have more resources than a printer. I know, that would be an argument for GDI, but proprietary drivers are unfortunate. I just bought this one: <http://www.brother.ca/en-ca/MFC/5/ProductDetail/Refurbished/MFCL2720DW> I think that this was the best one still in stock. I expect that it will work with Linux. And it can FAX! It supports PCL and PostScript emulation so I hope that no proprietary driver will be needed for printing. Scanning will likely need a proprietary driver.
