Not recognizing added RAM

Hi all, I thought I would know how to handle this but it turns out that I don't. I just added two new sticks of RAM to a system but it's not recognized by the BIOS or OS. # inxi -m Memory: RAM: total: 7.74 GiB used: 2.93 GiB (37.9%) Array-1: capacity: 16 GiB note: est. slots: 4 EC: None Device-1: DIMM_A1 size: 4 GiB speed: 800 MT/s Device-2: DIMM_A2 size: 4 GiB speed: 800 MT/s Device-3: DIMM_B1 size: 4 GiB speed: 800 MT/s Device-4: DIMM_B2 size: 4 GiB speed: 800 MT/s So Inxi sees all 16GB (as does memtest) and yet in the first line it shows RAM total at 8. dmidecode output is below Motherboard is an Asus F2A85-M. BIOS has been reset to defaults but not updated since the mobo was purchased. OS is current Manjaro KDE. The website specs say it can take 64GB. Is updating the BIOS necessary or are there other solutions? FSOSS 2018 registration

The registration page just went up. - Oct 25 & 26 (Thursday and Friday) - early bird (cheap) registration ends Oct 15. $75 for non-students, non-staff (note: any (educational?) institution is good for a discount. - seems to be at the Seneca @ York campus (I had heard that they were going to be moved; maybe next year) - for the first time it will be on the subway! I've enjoyed FSOSS for the years I've attended. I recommend it. You can even give a talk!

Got it! So you can definitely connect outbound on port 22! And yes, I was probing dreamhost.com on port 22. They got some 'splaining to do. I suggest you might want to hit up their support folks again armed with the information that your SSH client is using: diffie-hellman-group-exchange-sha1 OR diffie-hellman-group1-sha1 for key exchange, ssh-dss for host key, and aes128-cbc and hmac-sha1 for session encryption. dh key exchange question.

Hi folks, The accessible ssh client I use provides a way to send dh keys when I use ssh TELNET to reach a location. I have a bell dsl account, and since the first of July I have not been able to reach dreamhost who hosts my office shell. While I have not ruled out Bell as the problem, it started one day when they claimed to have a service interruption, and refuse to discuss Linux at all, I want to see if something else might have happened. With very few exceptions, every place where I visit involving port 22 presents the same dh key exchange failure. Was openssh updated on June 29 2018? Hosting companies who use some different Linux options for their shell services, scientific for example, still work. Shellworld does too, but we use a different port for ssh and the administrator still allows most public keys. can anyone provide wisdom here? Thanks, Karen

Questions on wireguard and networking

Greetings Found what looks to be a quite interesting vpn 'system' called wireguard. The dev team is still saying, after a couple years of what looks to be some very active development, don't run this as solid software. From the chatter that I've read the quality of the software is maybe like grub where it sat at version 0.97 for what was that - - - about 7 or 8 years ( and then hit version 2 in no time flat!). I am wanting to use this wireguard between two different routers here to firmly control not only the in but also the outgoing electronic communications. Perhaps someone has a better solution - --if so - - - I'm looking (grin!). TIA Dee

tr: Illegal byte sequence

I wrote a random password generator shell script, the core of which is this one-liner: dd if=/dev/urandom bs=1 count=256 2>/dev/null | tr -dc 'A-Za-z0-9!@$%^&*(){}[]=+-_/?\|~`' | head -c 32 The very ugly string 'A-Za-z0-9!@$%^&*(){}[]=+-_/?\|~`' is the ALLOWED values. The two counts are replaced by variables, the first 'count=' needing to be a lot bigger than the final '-c <number>' which is the length of the password generated. The size difference is necessary because 'tr' throws away a lot of values. I've never had a problem with this on Linux, but on a Mac under some circumstances we get: tr: Illegal byte sequence My coworker, who's also using the script, always got that error. It seems to come down to locale settings.
