war story: Seagate portable USB3 disk vs USB 2 port

My daughter has been using a 2T 2.5" external Seagate Disk. It has a USB3 interface, compatible with USB2. She uses it with her ThinkPad T520 which has only USB2 ports. A couple of weeks ago, the disk stopped working. The disk would power up but it would not show up. Oh oh, another disk failure. But it worked when I plugged it into my computer. In fact, it worked with any USB3 port and no USB2 port (even with a powered hub). I thought that this was impossible. So did Seagate support (I was talking with them on another matter -- two dead drives, one of which they had claimed was out of warranty when it was not). The support guy suggested trying a different cable, but neither of us thought that it was likely to work. Changing cables did work. So: a cable can fail in such a way that a USB3 device won't work with a USB2 port but will work with a USB3 port. The connector on the drive itself has a funny B shape. It is called a USB 3.0 micro-B socket. Apparently a USB 2.0 micro B plug can fit in half of it! Curiouser and Curiouser. I wonder if an ordinary micro USB 2.0 cable, as used with cell phones, would connect the drive to a computer's USB 2 port.

Hackathon at Toronto Public Library

Toronto Public Library is running a Hackathon to encourage the use of our open data: http://www.torontopubliclibrary.ca/hackathon/ It seems that the list of what data sets are available hasn't been finalized, but from what I've seen so far it's a surprisingly large and interesting collection (to my tastes, anyway). Unfortunately I'll be out of town that weekend so I'm unable to attend, but I'd love it if some of you could go create interesting things with our data! question -- how to boot from USB with multiple ISOs?

Hi all, Right now, I'm carrying around 2 USB sticks, - one 32GB -- it boots Linux and contains about 10 bootable ISOs. - one 8GB -- to 'dd' the real ISO that I want to boot. It's 2-step process, and it's ok. But, I would like to reduce it to 1-step. How can I boot those multiple ISOs directly from one USB stick? Eg. if you want to boot Fedora/Ubuntu/Clonezilla, what do you do? I guess you can carry around 3x8GB USB sticks, http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=11_180_632&item_id=07… but 1x32GB USB stick, http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=11_180_181&item_id=05… is better, I think. -- William

Using (Tomato) Linux (Router) as Web Proxy Server.

Request for help: Using (Tomato) Linux (Router) as Web Proxy Server. I remotely manage several Tomato networks. I would like to connect to the ISP's Usage Data web page, from the remote network, to check the remote network's data usage. I'd also like to run the ISP-specific (web browser) speed test from the remote network, to check the remote network's data rates. These seem like very ordinary, simple things to want to do. I'd like to find someone who has actually done these things, and who can help me do them. (I have found dozens of "how-to" web pages that don't work for me. But I have not found anyone who has said "I do this all the time, and here is how I do it". Instead, I have found many people who have said "I have never done this, and I won't try to do it myself it, but you should try this ....") Being able to do a web search on "my IP" and get the remote (proxy) host's IP address is really all need. So, if there is someone who actually has done this, please help! Thank you very much. OT: Inexpensive laptop for Minecraft?

Hello everyone! Thought I'd tap the collective brain. I'm looking for a relatively inexpensive laptop for my son, who mostly just plays minecraft (and occasionally needs the computer for school work, using google docs & a browser). Any suggestions of models, or places to buy? I'm looking for something pretty inexpensive, but with dedicated graphics that will allow him to play minecraft comfortably for the next year or so at least. Thank you! m
