Incremental File Backups on Windows 10

Under Windows 7 I successfully used rsync running under cygwin. After upgrading(?!) to Windows 10, rsync will freeze and I can only close the cygwin session. I have some time this weekend to find a solution. I did a Google and found this problem mentioned some time ago, but I never found a fix. Can anyone help, or suggest another solution? installing linux while retaining Windows 10

When I buy a PC, it almost always comes with Win 10 these days and I am not brave enough to throw it away. So I install Linux beside Windows. For this I need to shrink the Windows partition. Windows is unwilling to shrink its NTFS partition to less than half its original size. That's because it has placed the Master File Table in the middle of the partition and considers it unmovable. There are third party tools that can do this but I don't want to learn about them or trust them. So use Linux to resize the partition to give Windows less than half of the disk. There are a couple of tricks that you need to know. Windows 10, by default, uses something called Fast Startup. That means that when you ask it to shut down, it only hibernates. I think that that means that if you change its partition (or any of several other things) while it is shut down, Bad Things might happen. I think that it is best turn off Fast Startup before shutting down Win 10. Settings: System: Power and Sleep: Additional Power Settings: Choose what the power buttons do: Change settings that are currently unavailable: Under Shutdown Settings, untick: Turn on fast startup (recommended) (I don't think that Microsoft wants you to find this.) Shutdown Windows 10. Boot your favourite Live linux (need not be what you install). Run gparted to resize the NTFS partition. SUPERSTITIOUS MODE ON /* this seems to be needed */ Immediately shut down Linux. Reboot Windows (it will repair some damage caused by ntfsresize). Shut down Windows. SUPERSTITIOUS MODE OFF Install Linux however you wish to. You can turn on Windows' fast startup. But only if Linux and Windows share no filesystems. ================ Alternative solution (unreliable report of Giles' approach): Before EVER booting Wind 10, install Linux. Win 10 first-boot process won't eat a Linux installation.

The Microsoft store! <http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msca/en_CA/pdp/productID.332497100> I don't know if it is available in their bricks and mortar stores, but it is available online with free delivery (and free returns). $47.00 Canadian (less than US$35, the nominal and never discounted price from authorized distributors in the US)! Comes with an 8GB Micro SD card containing Windows 10 IoT. (Consider this a free bonus, with a defect that is easily remedied.) The page spends more ink on Linux than Windows. They don't seem to offer cases, power supplies, or other accessories. The picture shows a thing that is the size and shape of an SD card with as raspi logo (as well as a MicroSD card). But the Raspberry Pi 2 can't use an SD card. Perhaps it is a superfluous MicroSD to SD converter. (Older Raspberry Pi versions use an SD card, but I don't think that they can use Win 10 IoT.)

Seeking help with a unique Linux project?

greetings everyone, My name is Karen. I have only recently found this LUG, and joined the talk list. I am a professional singer/ songwriter and media producer with a unique Linux goal. I wish to make use of the varied console or command line based tools in Linux for my composition work, and if possible for accessing media materials too. I use adaptive technology, which is part of why my desire is to ssh telnet into my Linux box rather than work with it directly. I tend to prefer more traditional tools. for example one sound card in this box will be an m-audio audiofile 2496 production card to which I will be attaching my music keyboard. In any case while I have some of the tools I require, and firm knowledge that my goals are possible. I have not, at least not until now, found a Linux users group in Toronto where I can get the extra wisdom required. I am very used to Linux and UNIX based shell structures. I am using one at this moment based in freedsb, to draft my email, and use another based in Ubuntu for my nonprofit media newsroom's hosting account. Such is also part of why I want to start with a comparative way to use my Linux box. I would rather begin with a foundation where I can make use of and learn more right away, than fail to use the Linux box well at all. VOIP setup

I know there are some people on here that know about VOIP and Asterisk, and I'm looking for some pointers. I've looked at Asterisk a bit (a while ago) and it was kind of overwhelming. I want to have several phones and several phone numbers (a 416 for where I work, a 905 for where I live, and a 902 for where a bunch of my friends and family are). I want to pick up a phone, dial a number and have the appropriate VOIP phone number be used. I'd like a different ring tone from each of the numbers. I'd like an answering machine function with multiple mailboxes for various family members. I'd like to be able to access those messages (or at least be able to see that there are pending messages) from an computer. Some of these may not be possible/easy, but that's what I'd *like*. I currently have the 416 number via Primus which connects to a VOIP box (a Cisco SPA-122 that Primus provided). Any recommendation for a cheaper/better supplier for the multiple numbers I want to have? Thanks for any help! ../Dave
