Linux hardening question

Hi All, I am starting to go down the road to harden a Linux server, I am using the Ubuntu server image as my starting point. I searched a few articles and compiled a list of things to do, so far the stuff is a bit dated. So I was wondering if anyone has stuff ideas to help me harden my system which I plan to use to host my website using a VPS host. So far I've got step for the following: SSH / No root login, public key login Using DenyHost to reduce brute force password hacking Block port scanning Disable PING response Closing unused ports Q: What service should I consider disabling from starting automatically. Q: What program should I remove like (telnet) from my system. I am reading up on iptable and also know about ufw, but not sure how to setup a good firewall, like what to block and not. Any other ideas or checklist would be appreciated. Thanks, TH

Backing up Windows Machines to Linux NAS,

I'm sure many of us have friends and family with Windows Machines. And the savvy among us run our own Linux Backup server / NAS boxes. How do you get regular, automated copies of data off said Windows machines? I would like to only hear from folks that actively using a solution. Not a list of 'exercise for the reader' google results. # Goal: To recover from a ransom-ware infection, by pulling the last clean snapshot of user data from the NAS. # Assumptions: Snapshots are handled by the Backup Server / NAS at a FS layer (ZFS / BTRFS), or by the server side backup software. # Nice to haves: * In-transit encryption. # Not an Acceptable Answers: Open Samba on the windows box, mounting it on the backup server, and running rsync regularly. Package Problem

I am running Ubuntu 16.10 The last system update has run into problems. The Ubuntu Software GUI program hangs. I tried an apt-get and fount that there is a problem in: libssl1.0.0:amd64 This is the important part of the output: dpkg: error processing package libssl1.0.0:amd64 (--configure): package is in a very bad inconsistent state; you should reinstall it before attempting configuration No apport report written because the error message indicates its a followup error from a previous failure. Trusted Android repair in Toronto?

Hi all, While halfway on a part-family-part-business trip to Europe, my two-year-old LG G4 crapped out on me. It still appears functional though the screen is just darkish with random white lines across it. I am eager to hear if anyone here knows of a trustworthy shop that's able to deal with this. cheap today: 43 inch UltraHD TV

tl;dr: if you yearn for monitor resolution, have I got a deal for you! <http://forums.redflagdeals.com/real-canadian-superstore-rcss-haier-uhd-4k-t…> I use a cheap and nasty 39" UltraHD TV as my desktop monitor. I am very happy with the experience. Real Canadian Superstore is selling 43" UltraHD TVs for $298 + EHF but with HST already included in that price ($263.72 before taxes). I expect that it is a better TV than my 3 year old 39". I imagine 43" is a good size for a desktop monitor, but I'm not sure. I'm happy with 39" - I can view it at monitor-distance (25"? I haven't measured) and see text on it at normal pixels/character - I don't get whiplash looking around on my screen (but I do have glasses dedicated to this task -- a great investment) - it fits on my desk - it has multiple inputs so I can connect several computers at once There are flaws with my monitor. At full resolution (the only one I every use) it only refreshes at 30Hz. I don't find that bad (I don't game) but I think that the 43" monitor does not have this limitation. Many TV sets do "chroma sub-sampling" <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chroma_subsampling> This means that the colour (not brightness) on adjacent pixels is not totally independant. My monitor uses 4:2:2 sampling and that creates "artifacts" in some cases. I really dislike this in theory but I have rarely found it to be a problem. I have no idea what chroma subsampling, if any, the 43" TV does. I would guess 4:2:2. I expect to replace my TV when a cheap one comes out with HDR (High Dynamic Range) and no chroma subsampling. TV sets don't have DisplayPort inputs. Too bad. HDMI has struggled to keep up with the bandwidth of UltraHD. My TV's 30Hz limitation came from that (the HDMI standard has since been upgraded). Not all video cards can handle this. Nouveau doesn't drive my monitor properly so I'm using the proprietary nvidia driver. Nouveau may have been fixed but I only test every year or so. I don't have a powerful enough ATI card to test. I haven't tried Intel GPUs.

Vi-keybinding for MS-Word

I have no choice but to use MS-Office (mostly, Word and Outlook). And, my productivity is very low. Is there Vi-keybinding for Word or Outlook, just for cursor movement and editing text? -- William
