Dinner options for July 10th

There hasn't yet been any discussion... - Kabul Express is a pretty good "backstop" option if we don't arrive at anything else - Aura Foodcourt seems to be falling to near-nothing; perhaps closed already? - There was a rather spicy Pakistani place a bit further east on Dundas that we tried last year; it's a bit of a walk, but perhaps??? - I'll note that several Ramen places have been mentioned; I like the idea, abstractly, but they tend to be way too noisy and crowded for our crowd. Kinton, Guu, Hokkaido all come to mind :-( - We have done Blaze Pizza; it was a bit crowded for our crowd, but perhaps... I'm bringing this up so that we at least know we need to decide something; I'm avoiding having a decision so that perhaps ideas bubble in by tomorrow :-) -- When confronted by a difficult problem, solve it by reducing it to the question, "How would the Lone Ranger handle this?"

Thermal paste availability / Raising the dead

My main system stopped booting two weeks ago, so had to move back to my previous system. Fortunately, a lot of my stuff was in Dropbox, so after a decent interval, many of my files were available on the previous machine. Yay Dropbox. There are, however, still a few files on the dead system I'd like to get. Today I took that system apart, popped the fan off the CPU, and found dried thermal paste. Hmm. It's possible that the CPU might be cooked (I was away during the Final Crash), but on the off chance that it just over-heated and shut down (does that even happen?), I know I need to clean off the old thermal paste (Q-tips and rubbing alcohol) and apply new. Strap the fan back on, power up and see if it boots. Best Buy only ships this on-line, and Canada Computes doesn't seem to stock it. Can anyone comment on where they get thermal paste? I could wait for delivery, but it would be great just to get the stuff and move on. (OT) admin fee on BMO RRSP?

Another very off-topic post... Recently, I found out Bank of Montreal is charging me $10 + tax administration fee for RRSP account. I can't believe it. Maybe some option got turned on/off by mistake. bash completion half broken on FC 27

I have two laptops, both running Fedora 27. The main difference (from the OS point of view) is how they got to F27: the newer one was a fresh install at that version, whereas the other was upgraded step-by-step from F24. The other difference is the package sets, which vary somewhat - but both have bash, bash-completion, and 'pass'. (Since 'pass' is unsearchable, I'll point -> passwordstore.org - liking it so far.) On the older machine, Bash tab completion of files and subcommands works fine with 'pass'. On the newer machine, completion works for most things like 'dnf' and 'ls' - but not for 'pass'. I've traced this as well as I could: the pass package installs /usr/share/bash-completion/completions/pass . That file should be sourced by /usr/share/bash-completion/bash_completion which is sourced by /etc/profile.d/bash_completion.sh, which is in turn sourced by both /etc/bashrc and /etc/profile. And my eyeball-diff says that all these files are essentially matched on both machines (I opened and examined the relevant clauses in every file named). If I simply source /usr/share/bash-completion/completions/pass in a terminal, 'pass' completion works. So I thought "I'll use ~/.bash_completion to source it!" But here I found another bit of breakage: that file apparently doesn't get sourced (it does on the older machine). I can just throw a line 'source /usr/share/bash-completion/completions/pass' into my own or the system's bashrc, but I'd rather figure out the problem. Very off-topic, but since most Linux guys are handy with their hands, so who knows... Are there courses for home owner who is thinking about doing home renovation? There are tasks that should be left for professionals. But, if the owner can do minor things, then it could be cost saving. Assuming he does the jobs right. Rogers dhcp mystery

My internet connection stopped working. After some hunting, and some pecking, it works again. But I'm not sure why. Setup: - Rogers Cable - modem is set in bridge mode (i.e. it is not acting as a router and does not do Network Address Translation). - my router is a little PC with two ethernet ports, running the latest CentOS 7. - I'm using Network Manager. What went wrong? My router got an RFC 1918 IP address, 192.168.100.100. So it looked as if the modem forgot it was in bridge mode and started acting like a router. I don't know if it was doing NATing, but it certainly acted as a DHCP server, something it should not have done. I have no idea what precipitated this. I logged into the modem and it said that it was in bridge mode. (I had rebooted it a couple of times but with no obvious benefit). Connecting to the modem's web page was easy since the PC had been given an IP address on the same LAN. Normally I'd have to add the subnet onto the interface (something that I've not done done in a long time). I don't exactly know why my router couldn't work behind NAT. Double NAT is dumb but I think that it should work. Perhaps NATing was not being done. If not, packets from 192.168.100.100 were going nowhere. I rebooted my PC, hoping to lose the 192.168.100.100 IP address, but it stuck. This was one of many false starts -- I don't even remember all the details. I tried this command and my PC got the proper address: sudo nmcli c up WAN - c is short for "connection" - "up" means "Activate a device with a connection". I don't know what that means. Maybe it released the lease and acquired a new one. Maybe not. - WAN is the name of my Rogers-facing interface - I previously found the name of my connections with this command: sudo nmcli c show I don't actually know for sure that this command fixed by problem or something else did. I wanted to tell dhclient to release its leases and acquire a new one. The -r flag should do that. But dhclient is being run by NetworkManager and I didn't know how to properly do a -r. Observation: Network Manager mostly works but it makes it hard for me to apply my bottom-up knowledge of networking.

Gerbera DLNA problems

For years I ran Mediatomb, a DNLA server, on Ubuntu and played on a Panasonic Blu-ray player. Three locations throughout my home. No problems at all. Now, Ubuntu killed Mediatome, but Gerbera has taken over and I have that installed and running. But I have problems with some mp4 files. Some play very well. But they take longer to start playing than under my old setup. And many do not play at all. After about 30 seconds of trying to load a message window appears for 1/10 of a second, and I am back to the menu for selecting files. No idea what the message is is. All files play just fine on the Ubuntu computer. No problem with flac music files. I am asking for ideas on how to diagnose this problem. I can’t find any kind of support forum for Gerbera. All help appreciated! -- Stephen

I used to use a smallish LG, but courtesy of Scott, I have a Unihertz jelly, https://www.unihertz.com/jelly.html that is about half the size , (3 1/2 x 1 3/4")with about 2/3 the screen area of the LG (3 1/2 x 1 3/4") Now I need something about the size of my Kobo, https://ca.kobobooks.com/products/kobo-aura (6.5 x 4.5") for programs like Open Street Map and Waites' Guide to North American Birds.
