Prompting the return of In-Person events.

TL;DR I'd like to get a temperature of the room for other folks appetite for the return of in person meetings / events. Pleases chime in so that leadership can see what demand may exist that is being unmet. --- What are the barriers to returning to in-person? How as a community can we help to make this happen? Is this something the community still desires? Are there supplemental events that can happen outside of the main talk-oriented meeting, like a pub afternoon / night? GTALUG has endured for nearly four decades now, I was privileged to be part of that leadership for half of it. Stepping away in the years before pandemic, and returning only for a year in the wake of Chris's passing to help the board. For me, the value of GTALUG was the long tail of social interactions that came out of the in-person meetings and events. Little side bars on niche subjects, getting to talk with fellow folks about their choices of software, hardware or latest gadgets. Get into all the details and reaffirmations of friends and colleagues. Join a group meal ahead of the meetings, and staying late at a pub afterward. All activities that can't happen in a conference call. There were also the special events, like Linux in the Park. Meetups at conventions and trade shows, or even running a booth where it made sense. The pandemic changed a lot. Old venues have locked down, and plenty of folks have legitimate reasons to remain cautious. But what hasn't changed is the desire and need for that in-person experience and affirmation of community. I've been speaking with Alan, Gord, Evan and others about this void that hasn't been closed yet. I'm aware it's a topic of discussion at the leadership level. So to the questions above, let's bring this out where we as a community can come together to ask and answer. -- Scott Sullivan

Hello Linux Community, We are seeking a knowledgeable Linux specialist who can help us solve some Linux-related issues on older computers that we convert into educational information servers. As well, we are also seeking someone who is interested to help us provide refurbished computers with free educational information to people around the world who do not have access to or cannot afford high-speed Internet. Currently, we have a Lenovo IdeaPad V460 laptop computer that has been converted into a Linux Mint-based educational information server using this instruction: Setting Up An Educational Information Server (Linux Mint) <https://docs.google.com/document/d/10Koxtp8j5HRypqpw_TEeYUDNuvRAYwP5x1Fkfgh…>. Unfortunately, the hotspot feature did not work on the built-in WiFi hardware so we added this USB-based WiFI transmitter/receiver; Linksys AE6000 Wireless USB Adaptor <https://www.linksys.com/ca/ae6000-wireless-ac-mini-usb-adapter/AE6000-CA.ht…>. It works but other devices are not able to connect to it. My phone says “it cannot obtain an IP address” from the SSID transmitting from this laptop. I look forward to your reply. Regards, Paul

Hi folks, having just been creatively cheated by an eBay seller, who stated a device was unlocked when it was not, I am wondering about having the three devices I have combined into one functional one. They are LG phones though, which is why the need is legacy. thoughts? Cheers, Karen

some first impressions of new Snapdragon PCs

Note: I haven't touched one of these. This is based on things I've read on the internet. They looked attractive: - PC's based on an ARM processor that was kind of like Apple's - higher performance that x86, especially in computation per Watt. - a liklihood of being open since they were aimed at Windows - a liklihood of lower prices since multiple manufacturers can make PCs based on the processor So far, I'm tentatively disappointed: - full(?) Linux support is six months away. Support will be from Qualcomm. That doesn't really sound open. And who knows how long six months really is. - first reports (from the Windows world) is that real performance isn't what was promised. Apparently, at full throttle, these burn a lot of power. - the cost is in the same ballpark as Apple computers. - Qualcomm or Microsoft has not provided developers the tools to build software for the platform. - Intel and AMD are moving forward so any Qualcomm advantage may be narrowing. Oh, and "Recall", the centerpiece of Microsoft's Copilot+ PCs (the branding currently limited to Qualcomm-based products), seems to be a pretty bad security nightmare.

(very off topic) quality die grinder bits

Hi all, Very off topic, but I'm fed up. I sharpen my lawn mower blade with die grinder. Problem is, all the bits that I bought from Canadian Tire, Rona, and Home Depot, they all wobble. Except for one bit. And, that has been used so much that I need a new one, now. If anyone has die grinder, what brand of grinding bits do you recommend? --
