ancient computer history

I read this with fascination in 1967 or perhaps early 1968. It was almost current then! Looking at it now, I still remember some of the phrases. <https://www.computer.org/web/csdl/index/-/csdl/proceedings/afips/1964/5064/…> (I was in high school then and it was extremely difficult to get information about computers then. The internet is such a great facility! I used to sneak into U of T, Waterloo, and York to get accesss to computers.) It's fun to read of Algol's support for recursion and dynamic memory allocation of local variables: it is fair to say that they are difficult, and their inclusion in an Algebraic lanuage that is intended to be universal is controversial. How far have we come! (How did I end up on this page? I posted a link to the Algol 60 report to the list. The report is dedicated to the memory of William Turanski who was killed before the conference. I've always wondered who he was. It turns out that he worked with Anatol Holt on an early programming system for the US military. He also was a Putnam Fellow (undergrad math contest). Turanski is mentioned in Rosen's paper.)

Online Course for Lex/Yacc?

Every now and then, I come across situation where an ideal solution would have been a custom parser/interpreter, either to parse data format or to write my own sets of commands. In each case, I don't know enough to write it (I'm not Comp Sci) or don't have time. So, I end up resorting to shell, awk, python, etc. Now, I want to take some course on Lex/Yacc, finally! Suggestions for stopping occasional spurious use of commercial wi-fi

I have a Rogers-supplied router and cable modem package, which twice has shown significant usage when I was out, once with the original unit and once with their replacement Cisco. That makes me suspicious of the current state of authentication for wi-fi schemes (and I use the term "schemes" advisedly: they used to horribly leaky (;-)) What's a good approach? I have considered * MAC address lists, * no wi-fi (strictly wired doesn't work with solid concrete walls), * a second router with a more secure protocol (/is/ there such a protocol? And will my wife's Mac speak it?)) * something I haven't thought of --dave [The usage never runs me over my limit: I think someone is using me for downloads that might put /them/ over their limit] -- David Collier-Brown, | Always do right. # AGM Call for Candidates October, 9th is GTALUG's Annual General Meeting We are making the Call for Candidates for the Board. There will be two seats opening, for 2 year terms (2018-2020). Please consider running for the board, and keep in mind the following. Linux 4.19-rc4 released, an apology, and a maintainership note

We tend to attack developers without thinking of the impact on them. This list is an example of attacks on systemd. While Lennart doesn't read this list personally, I do know of the impact systemd criticism has had on him. He has shared recordings of death threats because of systemd. I think, we can all agree that, systemd, or pulseaudio did not make linux worse, at least enough to justify death threats. They haven't even made it bad enough to justify the constant attacks on the software. Remember, if you have a better idea, you have the _freedom_ to implement it. You, however, do not have the freedom to expect them to drop what they want to do, to fix your problems, and when they don't want to, be subject to attacks from you. ---- I do hope, Linus taking some time off will make things better for him, and by extension Linux. Boot setup issues

Greetings I have had it working before but I can't seem to get things right this time. I want to have two different copies of debian on one box with the choice of which when I boot in. Wanting to have available both debian stable (9.5 at present) and debian testing (10). This is so I can experiment with software - - - adding it and if huge errors result or are caused - - - no real biggie because its not a main working box (like the server or my main computer). Doing this because I really have gotten to hate having a main box down for even a few days because software that I loaded and installed caused me to bork the system (I've done this more than a few times!!! grin - - -but 'learning' isn't always a barrel of fun!!) So I've installed both of these systems (more than once each) they have their own partitions for everything but boot and efi yet I'm only seeing one system available on grub (depending upon the last install as to which). So I'm doing something wrong!! I tried using grub updating tools (# os-prober) still no joy. The web pages that I'm finding seem to be for an older version of grub and, as usual, I'm finding man pages are like reading cuneiform (which I find unintelligible). This is likely something quite simple but I'm just not seeing it - - - please - - - some ideas/pointers? TIA Dee

Last Ubuntu OS Update Breaks ffmpeg

And help and/or advise appreciated. I am using 18.4 and apply all updates. I have been using ffmpeg for many years to convert file formats. I am now getting errors that have me confused. Here is the command line: ffmpeg -i 101.Cat.avi -c:v libx264 -c:a copy 101.Cat.mp4 I now get many errors: libGL error: unable to load driver: i965_dri.so libGL error: driver pointer missing libGL error: failed to load driver: i965 libGL error: unable to load driver: i965_dri.so libGL error: driver pointer missing libGL error: failed to load driver: i965 libGL error: unable to load driver: swrast_dri.so libGL error: failed to load driver: swrast X Error: GLXBadContext Request Major code 155 (GLX) Request Minor code 6 () Error Serial #55 Current Serial #54 I Google the errors and everything seems to focus on bugs in Android Studio which I don't use.
