Hello LenThank you for your help.In at least 3 computers I have come across, that has this option grayed out. As shown in pic1 of that link you supplied. So it is not accessible. Every link I came across, basicly had the same solution you described. There for those three computers can not have a true format done. All three have corrupted hinden partions. Putting a new hard drive will not help either. Other than the simple out dated method that we all know about?</div> Well from what I can find the process is: When you see Toshiba logo, hit F2, then you should be in the UEFI (BIOS) settings. Under security tab there should be an option for 'secure boot' which you want to set to disabled. If you want to keep windows working, that should be all you change, and then you should be able to install linux as long as the distribution is new enough to support UEFI booting. If you don't want to keep windows and you want to use an older style distribution that does not do UEFI booting, then you have to also find the "CSM boot" setting (under advanced/system settings) and turn that on. That will break booting windows 8.1 on the machine though. Need to get rid of old computer parts

Hello everyone, I had to upgrade my old computer, and I can report a success with everything except VIA VL805 USB 3.0 host controller that locks up the system whenever I attempt to use USB 3 in Linux. Oh well. So right now I have a bunch of older hardware circa 07-10 that will go into recycling unless someone wants it and I can bring it to the next GTALUG meeting on Oct 13 AMD Athlon XP 3800+ with heatsink but no fan Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 with heatsink and fan 6x 2GB memory sticks of various performance (667-800Mhz), last time I checked all of them worked IDE Pioneer DVR-108 -- DVD-RW drive circa 2004 And for the in the off chance there are morbidly curious among you, I have two motherboards that are mostly dead. ASUS M4A-VM and ASUS P5KPL-VM Any takers? Alex.

question -- booting from USB on Chromebook ?

Hi, Canada Computers has "HP Chromebook 11 G3" on sale for $199. So, I bought one. The keyboard is better than other chromebooks or laptops at this price range. I have done the following successfully: - enabled Developer mode - installed Crouton script and "Crouton Integration" extension for Chrome browser. - installed Ubuntu (trusty, 14.04.xx, XFCE) So, I have ChromeOS and Xubuntu running at the same time. Now, booting from USB/SD is what I really want. This way, I can keep the Chromebook "clean" by having all Linux stuffs on USB stick. But, for the life of me, I can't get it to boot from USB stick. I did - crossystem dev_boot_usb=1 dev_boot_legacy=1 What else do I have to do? Has anyone here successfully booted from USB on Chromebook? Help... -- William

war story: Seagate portable USB3 disk vs USB 2 port

My daughter has been using a 2T 2.5" external Seagate Disk. It has a USB3 interface, compatible with USB2. She uses it with her ThinkPad T520 which has only USB2 ports. A couple of weeks ago, the disk stopped working. The disk would power up but it would not show up. Oh oh, another disk failure. But it worked when I plugged it into my computer. In fact, it worked with any USB3 port and no USB2 port (even with a powered hub). I thought that this was impossible. So did Seagate support (I was talking with them on another matter -- two dead drives, one of which they had claimed was out of warranty when it was not). The support guy suggested trying a different cable, but neither of us thought that it was likely to work. Changing cables did work. So: a cable can fail in such a way that a USB3 device won't work with a USB2 port but will work with a USB3 port. The connector on the drive itself has a funny B shape. It is called a USB 3.0 micro-B socket. Apparently a USB 2.0 micro B plug can fit in half of it! Curiouser and Curiouser. I wonder if an ordinary micro USB 2.0 cable, as used with cell phones, would connect the drive to a computer's USB 2 port.

Hackathon at Toronto Public Library

Toronto Public Library is running a Hackathon to encourage the use of our open data: http://www.torontopubliclibrary.ca/hackathon/ It seems that the list of what data sets are available hasn't been finalized, but from what I've seen so far it's a surprisingly large and interesting collection (to my tastes, anyway). Unfortunately I'll be out of town that weekend so I'm unable to attend, but I'd love it if some of you could go create interesting things with our data!
