I'm trying to help a local non-profit. Is there a simpler, and local, alternative to Dropbox. We just need to share a few files.

Nextcloud can do that, quite well. Probably can perform several other tasks such an organization might need (collaborative document editing, contacts synchronizing, calendar sharing, appointments booking, etc.)

It's free to self-host.
So, stick on an old computer in-house or on a $5 CAD / month VPS in "the cloud" and you're all set.

Just FYI - sync.com is a Canadian alternative to dropbox, plans appear to start at $6.00CAD/user/month, or as others have mentioned host a nextcloud instance somewhere.
I appreciate that sync.com is Canadian and works very well, but it sadly lacks a Linux client. I migrated my wife's business (shameless plug HTTPS://modernrascals.ca) to them last year only to discover this after the fact, and we ended up at mega.io, a New Zealand based company that works very well across all our devices.
