The problem is that you´re using a very old version of Flash. In fact, you´re using very old version of everything, as far as I can see. Ubuntu 12.10 - means you´re using Ubuntu from October 2012. Firefox 29 - the one I´m using is 34. Well, I think you should really think about updating your Ubuntu, so you´ll also have all the other softwares updated, since you´re using old repositories, with old versions of software.

I get the same thing in openSUSE 13.1, but, IIRC, it's possible to allow the video to run.

I use kubuntu and had the same problem but the following solved the problem: http://ubuntuhandbook.org/index.php/2014/04/install-adobe-flash-in-ubuntu-14... Incidentally, my kubuntu 14.04 is unstable and I will chuck it as soon as I get debian LXQt. /gary On 14-12-19 08:56 AM, Marcelo Cavalcante wrote:

Well, I think you should really think about updating your Ubuntu, so you´ll also have all the other softwares updated, since you´re using old repositories, with old versions of software.

Take a look at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EOLUpgrades/#Requirements . Can you post your /etc/apt/sources.list file? The IP that apt is looking at definitely doesn't have 12.10 or 13.04: http://91.189.92.201/ubuntu/dists/ When I used that post I manually made the change and didn't use sed so I can't confirm that that command actually made the proper changes needed. If you still have 12.10 then your /etc/apt/sources.list file should be something like the following: deb http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ quantal main restricted universe multiverse deb http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ quantal-updates main restricted universe multiverse deb http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ quantal-security main restricted universe multiverse On Sat, Dec 20, 2014 at 2:42 PM, Chris Aitken <chris@chrisaitken.net> wrote:

I had this exact issue a short while ago. The issue is that Ubuntu no longer has any of the packages for 12.10 live so apt fails to find the files it needs to do a dist. upgrade. I used the following post to get around this issue: http://askubuntu.com/questions/91815/how-to-install-software-or-upgrade-from...
I tried all those steps.
sudo sed -i -e 's/archive.ubuntu.com\|security.ubuntu.com/old-releases.ubuntu.com/g' /etc/apt/sources.listsudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgradesudo apt-get updatesudo apt-get install update-manager-core sudo do-release-upgrade

Tim, While I wait for your response, I at least have a workaround now that a local computer geek suggested. I went to ninite.com, chose linux > chrome > install, and even though it complained about updates failing, it completed the install. Chrome is in Applications > Internet. I clicked on it, it opened, I went to youtube and played a video no problem - no complaints about an old version of Adobe Flash. Should I still do this upgrade, or just use Chrome from now on? Chris

Also, I clicked on the red triangle icon on the panel, and the updates started! A lot of them - took over five minutes. I rebooted, and it's still Ubuntu 12.10 (quantal). So, no Ubuntu version upgrade but the updates took. Firefox still asking for Adobe Flash update, but Chrome is playing videos fine. Chris

You just managed to install whatever updates you had missed before they took the repository offline. You're still way out of date and missing any new security patches that have happened since the "end of life" date. Ubuntu 12.10 probably runs the latest Chrome just fine, but you are still running a fairly old OS that may have security issues.

Yes, that makes perfect sense. If I can't get your commands to install the upgrade, I'll take it to the local guru in January. Chris

Chris, When I updated my Fedora machine recently, I resisted installing flash. I noticed that most YouTube videos continued to work. Most Facebook videos did not work. Whatever was causing Firefox to lock up also was not working. I have since installed flash to cope with some ski club stuff, and my Firefox has been locking up again. I am not getting Flash's out of date message on my desktop. I have been getting it on my laptop. I have had an interesting problem with Google-chrome. I run a webserver on my desktop and on my laptop. My default URLs are http://desktop/~howard and http://laptop/~howard. I would log into my laptop, and the URL would come up http://desktop/~howard. I would fix this, and when I logged into my desktop, the URL would be http://laptop/~howard. I have an active Google account to which both machines are logged in. I do not like having my personal stuff stored on the cloud. Default URLs are not important, but I am not sure how far this goes. I am back running Firefox most of the time. I use Google-chrome Over on http://www.webpagesthatsuck, Vincent Flanders insists that Flash is dead. Let's help bury it. -- Howard Gibson hgibson@eol.ca howard.gibson@optech.com jhowardgibson@gmail.com http://home.eol.ca/~hgibson

Okay, I think you may be able to just run "sudo apt-get dist-upgrade" and things will work fine. It failed to run that second part because the update failed on some custom PPA's you installed. The dist-upgrade should then disable the PPA's and do the upgrade.

Easiest way is to download the 14.04 ISO image and then use the "Startup Disk Creator" to create a bootable USB flash drive. You then boot from the USB drive and follow the instructions. You should have everything you need on that older Ubuntu machine already, you just need to download the disk ISO.

OK - I'm starting in on this. Will there be any possibility of choosing the old GNOME interface, so I don't end up with Unity? Chris

I use the MATE interface, a Gnome2 fork. You can install it from Ubuntu 14.04LTS "Trusty Tahr" repositories now: http://packages.ubuntu.com/trusty/mate-desktop Install it from the commandline with 'apt-get install mate-desktop' I'd also install the packages 'mate-desktop-environment' and 'mate-desktop-environment-extras', but they seem to be available only in 14.10 "Utopic Unicorn": http://packages.ubuntu.com/utopic/mate-desktop-environment-extras Instead of upgrading from 14.04LTS to 14.10 to get the '-environment-extras' you may want to add the MATE repositories instead. That'll let you install the '-environment-extras' package, and probably provides you with a more current MATE core as well. Ubuntu 12.04 and 14.04 and probably 16.04 are Long Term Support versions of Ubuntu. They promise support for some years. The other Ubuntus are supported for about a year, if I remember correctly. Given that you kept your 12.10 past the end of support, I suggest you move to 14.04. Perhaps you will be done with your computer by the time 14.04 LTS expires.

Hey Marcello, I had the same problem with a debian system. You are using an outdated version of flash, you can still watch flash by clicking on 'allow' but you should really upgrade. The main issue here is that, flash player is not licenced by default and not packaged. The software that installs it on your system is called flashplugin-nonfree, but for whatever reason package maintainers decided not to bump its version number to force everyone to upgrade. You need to reinstall flashplugin-nonfree or flashplugin-installer however it is called in ubuntu, by running "aptitude reinstall flashplugin-nonfree" which you did. However, End-of-life of Ubuntu 12.10 was reached on May 16 this year -- http://fridge.ubuntu.com/2014/05/17/ubuntu-12-10-quantal-quetzal-end-of-life... So security repository is no longer active. This is the point where I, as all other people in the list would recommend you to upgrade to the latest Ubuntu LTS release, however if you want to just fix this problem, keep reading. Open terminal, type $sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list enter a password if asked Comment out all lines that contain security.ubuntu.com. Sigh.
Any ideas?

I really don´t suggest to keep using this outdated version of Flash pressing the "Allow" button. Flash player is known to have many many bugs in it´s stable and current versions.. so, imagine an outdated version. ;]

Running "aptitude reinstall flashplayer-installer" installs an up-to-date version from adobe site, and not from outdated Ubuntu 12.10 repository. On Fri, Dec 19, 2014 at 10:07 AM, Marcelo Cavalcante <kalibslack@gmail.com> wrote:

Hey Marcello,
I had the same problem with a debian system.
Open terminal, type $sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list enter a password if asked
Comment out all lines that contain security.ubuntu.com.
Then run aptitude updated && aptitude reinstall flashplugin-installer.
You should be good to go.
Alex.

It seems that Firefox can only use the latest 11.2 version because it's the latest available for Linux and no new versions will be made available. However, in Chrome I have 16.0.0.235 installed because it comes "built in". So, if Flash is important to you, you may want to switch to using Chrome (I'm not sure if Chromium also has this feature, but that may also be a possibility).

[First post, hey guys!] Hi Chris, Maybe you know that already, but it is also possible to use youtube-dl, a Free Software program, to download the video you want from the website. Despite its name, it works with many other websites, not only youtube. And of course, after you start using it and notice that you do not need a program that disrespects your freedom anymore, you can uninstall flash from your system :-). You definitely don't need Adobe's proprietary Flash to watch videos on YouTube anymore. I ditched Flash on my laptops years ago. A few better options for YouTube videos: - I second youtube-dl! It's awesome, highly recommend it. I guess an added benefit is less tracking than viewing on youtube.com in your browser. - Also, with YouTube, you can go to youtube.com/html5 to request the HTML5 player (it may not be enabled by default for Firefox, but that page will set a cookie to force it where available/compatible) - I do have Gnash installed, which works on YouTube where the HTML5 player isn't available, or where youtube-dl fails (e.g. VEVO channels). I think the packages for Ubuntu/Debian would be gnash and browser-plugin-gnash, but it's been a while since I installed it...

livestreamer is another general purpose option. Also, mpv can use libquvi to stream directly from YouTube, so I expect other media players can do the same. -- Tom Low-Shang

Note that youtube-dl is updated regularly (apparently Youtube is a moving target); if you're running Debian Stable you get a version that's too old to be of use. On my Gentoo box I find there's a new youtube-dl more often than not when I update. Best to run close to the bleeding edge on this package. Meanwhile, I don't install flash at all on boxes I'd like to keep unpwned. As a bonus, there aren't as many annoyingly animated ads. -- Anthony de Boer
