I had this exact issue a short while ago.  The issue is that Ubuntu no longer has any of the packages for 12.10 live so apt fails to find the files it needs to do a dist. upgrade.  I used the following post to get around this issue:  http://askubuntu.com/questions/91815/how-to-install-software-or-upgrade-from-an-old-unsupported-release/91821#91821

Well, I think you should really think about updating your Ubuntu, so you´ll also have all the other softwares updated, since you´re using old repositories, with old versions of software.
