Anyone doing Zoom on Linux
Anyone using Zoom on Linux? What is your camera/speaker/mic setup? All in one, or separate? Background: ----------- I want to use Zoom on my new CachyOS desktop. Zoom package (from vendor site) installs okay, along with its dependencies. Problem is "mic". - I have lots of 3.5mm earphones/mic (from old phones) with single combo plug. Problem is, my desktop has separate "mic" jack. Also, some of 3.5mm jacks are broken. - So, I bought $5 bluetooth speaker from Dollarama, which has speaker and mic. Speaker works with CachyOS, but not mic. - I have old USB "webcam", that is camera only. - Maybe, all I need is USB "headset" (headphones + mic)?
It never worked for me on Debian (10, 11, 12 & 13). Nor found a solution. I was using inbuilt microphone and mic. But they work well with other applications on Debian. On Mon, 12 Jan 2026 at 08:51, William Park via Talk <talk@lists.gtalug.org> wrote:

I have Zoom on an ancient (vintage) Thinkpad T430, and on a T470. I use the internal webcam on both, as they are good enough, and for audio I have a JBL Tune510-BT, and they work very well. When the bluetooth headset isn't around, I use a 3.5mm earphone to reduce echo. Both are using Mint 21. For Zoom I am running Debian on a classic style small tower desktop. The speakers are classic and seemingly ancient analog speakers connected to the motherboard's speaker out jack. The camera is a Logitech C920 webcam (with a built-in microphone). Now, the webcam C920 microphone does work and I have used it but... I have experimented with different microphones and currently by default I use a Blue Microphones Blue Snowflake USB microphone. The key advantage to the Blue Snowflake microphone seems to be that I can position it closer to my face than the webcam, so I gather that I sound better via that microphone than via the C920 webcam microphone. Anyone using Zoom on Linux?
I use Zoom more than I'd like. Mostly for meetings with a few peers and no audience. I refuse to run a binary from such an untrustable company. So I just use the web browser as a Zoom client. I suspect that the application has advantages but I don't know them. I also use Microsoft Teams, Google Meet (is that the current name), NextCloud, etc. (I use FaceTime sometimes, but on an iPad.)
What is your camera/speaker/mic setup? All in one, or separate?
I always use it with a laptop, using the built-in camera and mic. This is not optimal but seems good enough. - I like using a notebook because I join meetings from several locations. Furthermore, my main desktop doesn't get destablized by any fiddling and rebooting. It might that a separate table would be a good choice. - my original attempt was with my XPS 15 notebook. Unfortunately, its camera is in the hinge area and was christened to "up-nose camera". - I tried a Thinkpad E15 but its sound or video capture was poor. The audience complained. - I'm currently using a cheap HP notebook. It's OK. Only a few complaints from the audience. - I have a decent camera/mic from Razer. It clips onto a monitor. I find it too much bother. The rest of the meeting might disagree. This might be more practical you didn't have to place it and remove it each time (eg. on a desktop's monitor). - people who care about the quality of their camera and mic do a lot of things that I'm not going to bother with: camera placement, mic placement, lighting, background, etc.
I just installed Zoom as Firefox extension. Its size is about 300kB'ish. That was surprising, because Zoom app is about 1GB. I didn't pay much attention when I installed Zoom app, because I thought it would all be like that. OK, removed Zoom app. -- William On 2026-01-12 11:26, D. Hugh Redelmeier via Talk wrote:

William, I used Linux Zoom quite a bit. My microphone works fine, although I am not sure what it is. I have a camera with a built-in microphone, and a separate microphone connected through a 3.5mm jack. Your microphone settings come up when you right-click the Mute icon. My microphone is "Same as system". I have no idea what my system is using. -- Howard Gibson hgibson@eol.ca http://home.eol.ca/~hgibson

I use Zoom only for my annual condo meeting. It works fine. I use a Logitech C270 web cam, with built in microphone. It works well. I also use it with Jitsi every Saturday morning, with some friends. I have also used it with Google Meet and Microsoft Teams.

It's $1.62 initially (free shipping), but when I go to pay, it goes up to $6.61. Maybe Dollarama has USB headset... :-) Since I'm using desktop, online consensus seems to be - headset -- for mic (close to mouth) - webcam -- to angle downward, instead of up your nostrils. I'm aware of this, because when I use Windows10 laptop, I do position the camera as high as possible. - lighting -- I know it makes difference, especially "surround" lighting. But, I'm not doing YouTube channel. -- William On 2026-01-12 13:56, Evan Leibovitch wrote:

You need to know AliExpress lore / fine print. This item is "Choice". That means free shipping if the total of Choice items in your order is $10 or more. Just buy more stuff. There's always something cheap to pad your order with. It might take you hours to pick. Beware: most things are not "Choice". Off the top of my head, I'd probably pick these removable labels: <https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005010453820211.html? 1000 stickers for $9.28.

I tried that, when I was shopping for Raspberry Pi Zero 2W. AliExpress had it for around $25. When I went to pay, they say "They detected suspicious network activity", and asked me to slide a slider. So, I did, and the price jumped to around $47. I ended up buying from Amazon at a cheaper price. -- William

As I understand it, the first item in the first order you make from Aliexpress will be at a steep discount. If you haven't logged in, they assume that this is your first order. Once you log in, assuming that this isn't your first order, the price goes up. This may or may not be what hit you. ======================================================== Another scammy thing: Many listings have variants, selected typically as "color". When you do a search, they will show the cheapest color's price but the most expensive color's features. For example, I searched for a 10-port KVM switch and got this: <https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005009304918766.html> It shows a nice 10-port, 4k@60Hz switch and a price of $37.38 (plus $44.32 for shipping) But that price is for a 2 x 2 switch. The 10 port switches are out of stock (and always have been) and are more expensive ($119.68). Never mind that that is a good price.

Wow, that has never happened to me, and I've shopped at Ali for almost a decade from multiple locations over two continents. It's my dollar store for cables, adapters, small utensils and recently Labubus(*). I've never needed the slider (which appears to me to simply be the Chinese approach to doing CAPTCHA) but wouldn't consider that a major impediment. They have to deal with both scam sellers and scam buyers so I imagine they have certain grey-lists at play. My only guess is that the discount to $25 is a lure for first-time or prospective buyers. Temu does this too. I sometimes see stupid low prices before logging in but I ignore them. FWIW, shopping around on the site a little, my lowest price on a RPi0 2W is CAD$38.58 which includes fast-ish (about two weeks) shipping and no HST. - Evan (*) True story. At the height of the craze my granddaughter was massively annoying her family for one. I saw one at Ali really cheap; I was pretty sure it was a fake but what the heck. Turns out it was legit. Meanwhile, another relative thought he'd score some quick cash by buying and flipping a bunch, but the shipment he thought was legit was all fake.

Has anyone tried this Canadian seller: https://www.primecables.ca/ They're part of a Montreal based e-commerce suite of companies that do toner, ink, cables, and a lot more. Think online Best Buy but 100% Canadian. Looks like good quality options - lifetime warranties on some cables, for example. Founded in 2007. I've been experimenting with ads enabled on YouTube, and honestly, there are some fantastic Canadian companies manufacturing items that I've learned about. Some are even local to me (https://store.fantomwallet.com/ - competitor of Ridge wallets) that I've never heard of before, despite being in business for years. The ad was 10+ minutes of discussing design decisions in each component of disassembled products - and I love hearing about these engineering thought processes. I've bookmarked a whole bunch of these companies. The advertising styles tends to be "informative" as opposed to "aspirational BS". Current affairs show us we need to support home-grown industries. Probably worth a separate post though; I got derailed a bit here.

The claim is "100% Canadian", but they likely employ far fewer Canadians than Best Buy. No, and I wouldn't based on customer experience. <https:// ca.trustpilot.com/review/www.primecables.ca>
Those are bad reviews and indicate some problems, but... Trust Pilot mostly gets reviews from pissed off people looking to vent. They do not make a fair representation of a company's performance in my (limited) experience. TekSavvy gets a 2.7/5 and my experience has been closer to 4.5/5 over the past decade+. I take Trust Pilot reviews with a whole bag of salt, even though the posts may indicate actual problems people have had. Is there a company on there that has a generally favourable review score? It does sound like they (Prime Cables) have gotten worse over the years though.
The claim is "100% Canadian", but they likely employ far fewer Canadians than Best Buy.
Well, obviously. They're probably 1% the size. Where do the profits go, where are the employees (Canada, USA, China?), and how well are the employees paid are all more relevant than absolute numbers. Otherwise, Walmart would be a better choice than $Local_Mom_n_Pop_Shop.
Reviews indicate that most -- maybe all -- products in the catalog are imported
Again, I wish it weren't so, but does anyone make cables in Canada? It's unlikely manufacturing can "re-shore" from overseas if no one will value Canadian operations. Not that these guys are necessarily the answer, but they seem like a *possible* step in the right direction. Always looking for those...
The promotional video <https://www.youtube.com/watch? v=QMQKO8bIIUs> strikes me as more sketchy than persuasive.
It's hard do hit all the right notes for everyone, but that one is lame. Also, throw back to 1990s when 3×"w" was too hard to say:
double you double you dot prime cables dot com
(while video title says "| PrimeCables.ca| Our Cables Are Great!" <-- a dot CA domain. They probably have both, but it's funnier than the video's flat jokes.

They did start out as a Kickstarter project, I guess they continue that ethos. One of the things I kind of liked about some of the old-time ads on late night radio replays of shows from the '40s and '50s - the advertising was more "what and why" instead of pure BS.

Yes: Shopperplus.ca has at least two other faces: primecables.ca, and 123ink.ca. They don't hide this. They have house brands including Moustache, Stora, SortWise, Oxo. Almost all is manufactured in PRC. Some, perhaps, to Shopperplus specs, some with private labels. I infer that they do some quality control when sourcing. They are quick to ship using the usual shippers. So: slower than Amazon (who isn't). Below a threshold, they charge for shipping. The threshold changes during most big sale days. Trick: sometime a special item will have free shipping: your whole order will be free. I first bought from them because they sell some MonoPrice cables. Those had a rep for being good good quality at a low price. MonoPrice charged a lot for shipping to Canada. This was in 2015. I've bought lots of things from Shopperplus since then. - 123ink toner cartridges (they've also been available from other retailers). It's easy to find the right thing there, including drums. - 27" UltraHD monitor (I think it was a MonoPrice) - cables of many varieties. - goo-gaws like cable organizers. Their sales have been fun. They even sell selected MinisForum mini PCs. My newest PC is a MinisForum, but from AliExpress, during a sale, at a much lower price. <https://www.primecables.ca/p-487023-cab-mss1max-128g2t-minisforum-ms-s1-max-mini-computer-mini-pc-black> When something has been wrong, I've been able to phone and get a fix. I don't remember serious hold times. I have always been satisfied with their response. The person on the other end seems to be in the Montreal area. My quality expectations have been modest and have been met. I last bought stuff during Black Friday sales. USB charger, garbage bags, etc. AliExpress prices are lower, but more of a crap-shoot. It is easy to waste time on AliExpress. The vendors all try to trick you in various ways.

They might still be fakes. The quality of the fakes varies quite a bit (we picked up a number of them a few months ago at various street shops in Shanghai for not much at all. I think the cheapest was about $2.) Some have tags that look like the real ones, but other things are slightly off. We did get a few real ones from the official store too.). They might still be fakes. There are multiple ways to tell the real article, from the barcode on the tag, to the pattern on one of the feet and even the design of those awful teeth. There are a few "how to spot a fake" videos out including some by Pop Mart themselves, and I found myself learning way more about this topic than I ever wanted to. Some of the ones we got have working barcodes the same as the real ones, but other things are clearly wrong, like spelling errors on other tags. It's interesting to compare the details on the various ones. I also wonder of some of the fakes are run on the same production line but using lower quality materials, or perhaps in same cases using rejected parts from the official production. -- Len Sorensen
