Is there a Canadian company like noip.com?

I'm going to try self hosting again, last time I used noip.com, but since it's Canada Day, is there a Canadian alternative?

I use https://websavers.ca/, they're a Canadian company (Halifax?) hosted in Quebec on OVH servers. Can get 1 vCore (CPU), 2GB RAM, 1 IPv4, 1+ IPv6, 10GB disk, 5TB traffic for CAD $5 / month. Easy enough to add more, although I don't think they support per-minute scaling like some providers (not sure though). Happy enough with them. Transferred my domains there too, although I find their basic DNS management software a bit less than optimal. Should probably just do my own DNS.

I want to run a server from home, is more of the goal. On Tue, Jul 1, 2025 at 8:13 PM Ron via Talk <talk@lists.gtalug.org> wrote:

Is the goal here to just have dynamic DNS or also a "free" subdomain? If you already own your domain, or are willing to buy one, most registrars will have some sort of API call to update the DNS records. If the goal is to have a "free" subdomain as well as dynamic DNS, I am not aware of anything in Canada that does that. Off the top of my head, afraid.org provides a free subdomain with dynamic DNS, and eu.org provides a free domain in the x.x.eu.org, you will have to find your own DNS hosting, dns.he.net comes to mind. Hope that helps -nick On Tue, Jul 1, 2025 at 8:24 PM Gron Arthur via Talk <talk@lists.gtalug.org> wrote:

Ah, apologies for misunderstanding. I guess I should've checked noip.com first... Okay, it's a DDNS service by the looks of things. I'm on TekSavvy *cable*, formerly Shaw's last-mile, now I guess it's Rogers. It lets me run lots of servers from home, and I only update my IP in the domain registry management software less than once per year. So, depending on your ISP, you may not need a DDNS - your IP may be stable enough to not have to worry about it. What's your ISP for starters? How often does your IP change? Which services / ports does your ISP block? Hopefully I've gotten a little more on-target with this post?

I'm with Teksavvy (through Bell). Not sure what ports are blocked yet. How frequently do you think that the IP changes for you? On Tue, Jul 1, 2025 at 8:40 PM Ron via Talk <talk@lists.gtalug.org> wrote:

I'm on Rogers. With them, the IPv4 address changes so seldom, it's virtually static. Also, they provide a host name based on the modem & router MAC addresses. However, they will change with a change of hardware. It's a simple matter to use an alias to to that host name, as I do, rather than DDNS. In addition, Rogers provides IPv6 and the prefix is pretty much static. I've had the same one for over 6 years. It's even survived replacing both my firewall computer and cable modem.

DSL or fibre?

Every couple years, maybe longer. I think DSL IPs change much more frequently. Keep a log of your IP and see how often it changes with something like this script which queries another of my scripts: echo "$(date --iso-8601='seconds') $(dig +short -p 53535 @kw.bclug.ca my.ip)" >> /path/to/myip.log Put it in a cron job for hourly runs and see how frequently your IP changes.

the Only issue with OVH as infrastucture provider is that they have started cutting costs on abuse management from all of their IP resources, some other providers like Dreamhost started doing the same. The problem is that this is not a place to cut back on costs and policies as sometimes entire IP ranges end up in data lists making it hrad, difficult and sometimes impossible to send or relay email reliably through OVH ranges. If you are involved in Spamhaus or the others, it is easier as you can take over abuse for your assigned ip's It is possble to also lease router and then simply assign your own IP numbers but for that you probably need to have a commecial application (or just be rich) Andre

I use https://desec.io/ and am quite happy with them. They have a comprehensive API, their infrastructure is open source, and they’re based in the EU. Not exactly what you’re looking for, but at least it’s European (German). Rouben On Tue, Jul 1, 2025 at 19:59 Gron Arthur via Talk <talk@lists.gtalug.org> wrote:

I use EasyDNS.com. Not sure if they have a dyndns service but they are in Toronto. I also use Teksavvy and have a static IP address. Teksavvy will also route a subnet to you if you wish. On 2025-07-01 19:59, Gron Arthur via Talk wrote:

Very interesting. I have Teksavvy ADSL on Bell copper at another site. I have a static IP address and run my mail server on it at the moment. I used to have a similar setup at home, with Vybe Networks, but Bell recently accidentally broke it and refuses to repair it (my phone-on-copper line went too but a few weeks earlier). Long, stupid, painful story. Will Teksavvy do static IPs on Bell fibre? It's news to me that Teksavvy would route a subnet. I have globally assigned /24 that Vybe advertised and routed for me. Teksavvy would not do that when I talked to them about 5 or so years ago. Maybe Teksavvy will only route a subnet that they suballocate and rent to you. /24 is the smallest subnet that can be globally routed.

Will Teksavvy do static IPs on Bell fibre? That I am not sure of. I did not know that they could even provision anything on bell fibre. I thought Bell was keeping their fibre all locked up and away from any kind of wholesale program.

When I had iplink.net we would route peoples /24. Not sure if the current owner will still do that.

A /20 has 16 times as many addresses as a /24. So I consider it large. The truly large are the /8 networks. Apparently is is fairly hard to "buy" globally routable subnets. The usual way of getting addresses now is to rent them from your upstream service provider. You can rent subnets smaller than /24 because routing is handled internally by the service provider. My /24 was assigned before the modern structure of assignment existed. It might even have been assigned by Jon Postel (I don't remember). I don't have an ASN.

You can still buy and rent V4 address spaces and there are a couple of online markets for them. It use to be that you could get an allocation from ARIN if you could provide a justification but I think that has long gone. The newer allocations also are coming with an annual change. You should be able to get an ASN from ARIN but that may start triggering annual charges so it would take a bit of research. If you cannot use your /24 it may be possible to rent it out on one of the sites catering to people who want V4 address spaces. Not sure of the hoops that you would need to jump through to make that possible. -- Alvin Starr || land: (647)478-6285 Netvel Inc. || home: (905)513-7688 alvin@netvel.net ||

A /56 is the default delegated subnet size for IPv6, you should break it down further to a bunch of /64s I have mine setup using systemd-networkd to automagically do a SendRA I should do a short write up on this, but it is really a couple of lines, throw in a couple of UFW lines everything is now IPv6 enabled. Anyone remember Viagenie/Hexago/Freenet6? :) On Wed, Jul 2, 2025 at 11:34 AM James Knott via Talk <talk@lists.gtalug.org> wrote:

I get a /56 from Rogers on IPv6. That's 2^72 addresses!
