Hi, I want to weld "locking bit holder" to a cordless screwdriver which just has regular non-locking magnetic bit chuck. The weld doesn't need to be solid around. Just 3 spots will do. I tried all kinds of "glues", but they don't last. Does anyone have (arc) welder, and willing to accept a dozen donuts as payment? Relevance to Linux: Less time I spend on this, more time I can spend on Linux. --

Does the locking bit holder touch any type of plastic, like housing or other parts? On Sun, 12 Jan 2025 at 03:11, William Park via talk <talk@gtalug.org> wrote:

No. The "joint" is about 0.5-in from the base of screwdriver, and about 1-in from the sleeve of locking bit holder. It's too close for propane torch, if that's what you have in mind. :-) On 2025-01-12 16:15, Don Tai via talk wrote:

I stick weld (SMAW arc weld), heating the metal up to 6k C. This will obliterate all the plastic nearby. You will need to disassemble the screwdriver to have any hope of repairing it. There must be another way to put your locking bit holder on to your cordless screwdriver. Do more research. Also is the metal you want to weld ferrous, like can you stick a magnet to it? My recommendation is to buy a new cordless screwdriver, unless you wish to spend more time figuring out how to disassemble it. The battery is also close by, which would also be a concern. It is winter and f-ing cold outside, so I'm not welding. I'll be batching up jobs when spring comes. On Sun, 12 Jan 2025 at 17:44, William Park via talk <talk@gtalug.org> wrote:

From what I saw on YouTube, you just touch, then zap. Now that you mention it, I don't remember seeing any plastic near the metal parts that they are welding. :-) On 2025-01-12 17:51, Don Tai wrote:

agreed, touch, make a weld drop and you're done. The part we don't see is that the metal is so hot that you can't touch it for 10 minutes, and any plastic near it will be completely melted. Melting metal requires high temps, 6k celsius is quite hot. I have used needle nose pliers to hold metal pieces together for simple one touch zaps, and have melted the plastic handle covers. I have used welding magnets to hold metal pieces together for a single zap spot weld, and have melted the paint off the magnet. Hmm, that will ruin both the screwdriver (body) and the locking bit holder (the outer finish and magnet inside). OK, bad idea. I'll keep applying "krazy glue". Thanks for the info. -- On 2025-01-13 20:48, Don Tai wrote:

not crazy glue, but epoxy, something like JB-Weld. it is not as strong as a metal weld but might be good enough for your usecase On Mon, 13 Jan 2025 at 23:28, William Park <opengeometry@yahoo.ca> wrote:

In the same direction. Try a polyisocyanate glue like Gorilla Glue. I have used that to fix a magnetic bit holder and it seems to be holding together for something like a year now. The glue foams up a bit and fills all the space but you need to be careful that it does not expand where you do not want it. On 2025-01-14 09:24, Don Tai via talk wrote:
