alternatives to gmail working well in Ubintu?
Hi folks, I was going to just ask for alternatives to consider, but want to keep the Linux element here as I mainly use a Ubuntu shell. Now that google is making it profoundly difficult reaching basic html in low graphics environments, I may need a new home. I prefer reading on the web for this account, especially as I use it largely for research needing to follow article links and work with file attachments. Any solid ideas? Thanks, Karen

I also said that I prefer reading on line, which clearly means not a client, regardless of the various concepts comprising low graphics. I have used Yahoo mail, reading through a browser, which seems much less graphics intensive than GMail. The issue is that Yahoo spam control is nowhere near as good. And Yahoo was hacked a few years back. So while the web interface is less graphics intensive, the email functionality is inferior to GMail. I don't know if GMail still has a low graphics link. Karen, I am sorry, I don't have a suggestion for you. However, I did a quick search and couldnt find mention about Google blocking third party screen readers. Do you have a link? I was not aware of it, and this is certainly the wrong direction for accessibility and probably needs to be spread about. Beyond that, I am trying to understand your requirements, to make an informed suggestion. Why is basic html getting hard to read? Deeper actually. First google largely blocked the use of browsers that are low graphics, even those like links and elinks which are open source browsers that can be compiled with a form of JavaScript. Google stated in a press statement circle October 2018, that since only crooks turn off JavaScript, they were justified in requiring only JavaScript, as they define it, to sign into a google account. For example if you have an account and try visiting mail.google.com/mail In say lynx if you have a copy, you will get the error. Now, I have more than one gmail account, the one with which I am having trouble though Is for me to use in more than one place. for example if I am doing research at the Toronto public library, those working with me send results there, I process files from other sources there as well. I got to the basic html edition of gmail for this account however via a bookmark set in my home machine setting for Lynx. About three weeks ago, google shut down that door too, likely because I had not set html as the default, again so I could use the account when working with others. the result is that I cannot sign into this account at all, using any of the combination of low graphics tools I can access. Google is now blocking any browser, even with JavaScript, that they consider not what they will support so to speak. Does that make more sense? I will share when I have more information about the third party screen reader block. Thanks, Karen
Hi Karen, I haven't done this in a while from a desktop, but the access from Thunderbird etc to Gmail is not done through screen readers but rather the venerable IMAP protocol which is supported. https://support.google.com/mail/answer/7126229?hl=en This is most commonly used by mobile, where there are a number of email interfaces that people may prefer to Gmail's front end. Even Outlook for Android supports this.
From a low-graphics PoV I have to go back to my brain's archives, but there are still readers out there that don't require a GUI. My old favourite "Pine" is no longer under development but its successor and a few others are. https://fedoramagazine.org/3-cool-text-based-email-clients/

But I myself went through a very long and arduous search for an email hosting service provider a few years ago, when AT&T shut down their email hosting service, I decided to register my own domain name so that I would never ever again have to fo thorugh the huge task of notifying recipients of the change in my emaii address. And not go through the even more onerous task of upating numerous online services and forums where I am registered through my email address. For sure you would be wise to get away from an evil player like Google. Make competition work for you by going with a large established provider, but not a monstrous monopoly like Google. * * * * * * The task for me came down to finding a good reliable web hosting service that also offered email hosting. Although there are many other equally great hosting services out there, I am happy I chose to use www.siteground.com They are not the least expensive service but well worth the money I pay every month. Rock-solid reliable infrastructure and exceptionally literate and knowledgeable support team. The spam filtering offered by Siteground as basic functionality works well for me. Never a false rejection of a legitimate email and very few spam-suspect-quarantined emails for me to handle. Siteground provides a choice of three (3) HTML webmail user interfaces. I use RoundCube, the open source one, because I favour open source if at all possible. I use the Comodo Dragon web browser with RoundCube webmail interface, as Dragon seems to work better that Firefox. Although I actually fetch all my emails via POP3 and keep them on my local PC, I also use the Siteground webmail interface as a backup and to help me with issues when MS Outlook Express on WIn XP mysteriously fails to fetch the occasional email via POP3. Karen, Are you looking for email that runs in a shell? reaching = reading? I use the email client Sylpheed, which runs in a window, i.e. not in a shell. It happily downloads gmail through POP. Sylpheed generates email in plain text, but it is fairly good at reading email generated in HTML. I have at least one contact who sends stuff in Microsoft TNEF format. I save this in a temporary directory and use the command tnef (/usr/bin/tnef) to extract it. I originally installed Sylpheed because it worked well offline. Back in the days before wireless, this was absolutely necessary. This still comes in handy. The send-later feature is also useful for those emails that require twenty four hours cooling time before sending. Sylpheed uses mh (mail handler) format, rather than the more popular mbox format. I think I would prefer mbox, but mh is extremely robust. Sylpheed links nicely to your browser, and you can see those wierd HTML anchors correctly down at the bottom of the screen, e.g. <a href="http://www.cibc.iamafuckingasshole.biz">http://www.cibc.ca</a> If you must use a shell, I am pretty sure Alpine will download gmail through POP. No Howard, I am looking for an alternative email platform comparative to mail.google.com, where I can reach access and work with e-mail in a low graphics environment. that means with a browser. links elinks both of which can incorporate javascripting in Linux, or lynx, which i use for almost everything else several times a day. I subscribe to a shell service, with my website having another shell account there. I cannot install a client here, nor add a third e-mail address here. Is that more clear?
