You can find a ton of voip phones on Facebook Marketplace really inexpensively. I got a few for ham radio use 2 yrs ago for $50. I think it was a box with 7-9 phones. On Sat, Aug 30, 2025 at 9:35 AM Alvin Starr via Talk <talk@lists.gtalug.org> wrote:
Hi all,
Anyone using "VoIP.ms Softphone" app from Google store? Why does it have low review on Google store?

I'm thinking about moving my landline number to VoIP.ms. I would need another ATA box, because my current one is locked to Teksavvy. With "VoIP.ms Softphone", I can avoid buying another ATA box, and my usage will be the same as now. The only new feature would be having SMS on "homephone".
You can get an ATA on amazon for as little as $40 and I am sure if you search Ebay you can find something cheaper. I got a Grandstream ATA recently and they are now at about $90 on Amazon. The upside of an ATA is that you can plug you wireless POTS phone in and keep using it.
I have had mixed luck with SMS and softphones. I have setup voip.ms to forward the messages as email and to my amazement you can reply to the email and a text will be sent back to the sender.
