Re: [GTALUG] Interest in an IM for TLUG?

What about IRC? It's a "no setup needed" solution, everyone can install a client, and there's lots of servers to choose from... There are so many times I get IMs/Texts from people asking where we are meeting for dinner that alone would be a great help. 0 for Telegram. I'm not a fan of the "security" aspect of it and would rather if GTALUG used a more open system like Riot.im. But I would go to where the people are going. Hi all.
A couple of casual; conversations took place before and after Tuesday's meeting regarding the "where to eat" issue. I suggested that maybe some situations such as this could benefit from a real-time chat system.
Scott mentioned the PITA factor of TLUG itself creating and monitoring an instant messaging group, so I am volunteering to set this up IFF demand exists.
That does not mean everyone has to love it, and email will continue to be the "official" place for meeting notices and official business. But I thought this might be better for those of us who are getting tired of email threads, and the newer generation that by and large detests email.
The preferred (and arbitrarily chosen) tool is "Telegram". It's support for Linux is excellent, it has a (unofficial) Pidgin plugin available, and a user base already in the hundreds of millions. I know that many have Skype but I'm trying to wind its use down; the latest update, with all the sine-wave animations, is dreadful.
So... please speak up if you think this would be a good thing. If you won't use it, that's OK too. All I'm looking for is reasonable expectation of use.

I banned myself from IRC about 6 or 7 years ago due to spending too much time there helping people with linux problems. I have so far managed to stick to the ban. Not to make that a reason to not use IRC. I don't make most meetings anyhow, given that means going downtown. :) -- Len Sorensen

Indeed. These days, there's a web interface into freenode.net, which is a widely-used existing IRC server that I have used for other things. http://webchat.freenode.net/?channels=gtalug There are a whole bunch of access methods, nicely demonstrated thus: http://old.haxe.org/com/meeting/irc, though that article misses the emergence of "apps"; there are certainly some Android apps for this, such as HoloIRC (source on GitHub), and there sure are more than that. For the purpose that we have, I'd think that good enough. Authentication does not appear too terribly important for agreeing on a public place to eat. I'd be really loath to set up a server for this; I'd much rather point to freenode for the once-in-a-while need. That seems to be about the right level of technology for the purpose. Supposing this turns out to be an agreeable approach, we would presumably create a wiki page akin to http://old.haxe.org/com/meeting/irc with a bit more modern information (such as links to Android clients). -- When confronted by a difficult problem, solve it by reducing it to the question, "How would the Lone Ranger handle this?"
