microsoft giving away science fiction ebook, free but DRMed

<http://news.microsoft.com/futurevisions/> This is a collection of short stories "inspired by microsoft". You can download it for free, but only from ebook stores: Amazon Amazon (International Sites) Barnes and Noble iBooks Kobo So free as in beer, not free as in speech. I find that interesting. (I haven't checked that there is DRM but I'd be surprised if each store applied its own.)

Unless it features annoying robotic paperclip sidekicks, Big Bob Brother and huge killer blue screens, I'm not interested.

Don't worry, they will. Mercifully, we have good folks like Apprentice Alf who make DRM go away, so we could have an epub of this if we wanted. cheers, Stewart

Actually there are some notable authors. Actually, to be more clear: I recognize some authors' names, and I'm not really current on SF authors. | > (I haven't checked that there is DRM but I'd be surprised if each | > store applied its own.) Sorry, I missed a "didn't" in that sentence. | Don't worry, they will. Mercifully, we have good folks like Apprentice | Alf who make DRM go away, so we could have an epub of this if we wanted. That would be breaking the copyright law Harper brought in a year or two ago. Criminal sanctions! Imagine "stealing" free stuff! (I object to using the term "stealing" for unsanctioned copying.) (Hmmm. I seem to have used "sanction" in almost opposite senses.) I don't strip DRM (at least not yet) but I thought that the popular tool for ebooks was Calibre + some plugin.

There are reader apps for Amazon, Kobo etc. that run on tablets. That's all you need.

I supported Kobo in the past (DE/AT, GB, AU/NZ, CA, US). Last I checked, these devices ran on GNU/Linux and Android... ironically, officially we didn't support GNU/Linux. For PC's we basically directed customers to a few applications, aside from the Kobo program... http://www.bluefirereader.com/ http://www.adobe.com/solutions/ebook/digital-editions.html http://kobo.rakuten.co.jp/info/faq/ https://github.com/kobolabs I believe the main dev is in TO, he might even be lurking on this list! regards, Daniel Villarreal https://plus.google.com/108114195144917024494 http://www.youcanlinux.org/

On my computers, I prefer PDF and epub on my tablet. I have several O'Reilly books. O'Reilly books are DRM free and usually available in multiple formats. So, I download both PDF for my computers and epub for my tablet. I usually have just reference books on my computer and read everything else, including books downloaded from the library, on my Android tablet.
