Shopping for bluetooth headphone... which brand?

To audio experts, I'm shopping for bluetooth headphone (over-ear), and I can't believe the prices. Is there a good brand that you'd recommend at $100 range? -- William Park <opengeometry@yahoo.ca>

You won't find any decent over the ears under $200.00. However, if you have a good pair of wired headphones, you might consider a bluetooth adapter, such as the BlueAnt[1]. Your other choice is to buy a pair of bluetooth earbuds or IEM's. After reading the rave reviews on Amazon, I bought a pair of mPow (xmpow.com) - work like a charm! r360design.ca On Sat, Jan 13, 2018 at 10:09 PM, Charles Philip Chan via talk <talk@gtalug.org> wrote:

I got my wife some (Made by LAPTIC) on amazon a few years ago for the insane price of $40 and they work great and put up with a lot of abuse. Too bad that model isn't available anywhere anymore. I do see some with great reviews on amazon that I would certainly consider if I had to get another set, such as: https://www.amazon.ca/COWIN-Bluetooth-Headphones-Microphone-Comfortable/dp/B01N6NMEAM/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1516032842&sr=8-9 They have quite a few that may very well work well for the $60 to $100 range. -- Len Sorensen

https://www.amazon.ca/COWIN-Bluetooth-Headphones-Microphone-Comfortable/dp/B... is on sale for $45 starting at 13:15 today (or 12:45 if you have prime) for about 5 hours. I actually picked up these except with the noise cancelation feature for my wife a couple of days ago and they work just fine. Sound quality seems decent (certainly for the price) and they have quite decent battery life. They also nicely use standard connectors so no custom cables to worry about (that is micro usb for charging and 1/8" jack if you want to use analog audio instead of BT). -- Len Sorensen

Thanks for the tip. I snagged one of these before the flash promo ended.

Just wondering, does the headset work in analogue mode when the battery dies and can you switch off ANR to extend the battery life?

Yes it works in analog mode without the battery as far as I know (I did not try it yet but I believe that is what the manual said). On the model with active noise cancelation (which is not the one on sale) the switch has settings of: Off, BT, Noise cancelation (which also enabled BT). I think it is supposed to also work with analog in noise cancelation mode. Will have to give it a try. The version on sale has just analog and BT. The version I picked up a few days ago also has active noise cancelation (but cost $80 instead). -- Len Sorensen

Thanks, I ask about noise cancellation out of general interest. I personally don't have all that much need for any ambient sound cancellation. I used these for a couple of hours yesterday and this morning to listen to some voice recordings, music and soundtracks. Overall I'd say the sound bias is towards movies and games rather than classical or other music. I assumed that's what the bass enhancement is for. They are not as tight a fit as I expected. I always thought of my head as rather large and square(ish) but they do slide around a bit if nod my head too quickly. However, this wouldn't be the first time I kluged a backstrap for an over the ear headset. For $50 and delivered overnight, these suit my general needs, which would be mostly quiet listening in quiet spaces. Cheers

I have been looking for some time for decent (and decently priced) headphones that are both Bluetooth and active noise cancelling. To date the gold standard has been the Bose Quietcomfort 35, but those are US$350 and out of almost everyone's range. Much closer, but still more than $100, are the and Samsung PN-900, both now about $170 but occasionally discounted to the $150 range. Obviously the noise cancelling adds to the price and reduces choice, but these are also known for decent sound. Last week when visiting a friend in the US I bought a set of Bluetooth noise cancelling in-ear headphones, the Linner NC50. Sound is good but NC is yet to be tested. US$80 but doesn't ship to Canada. … and for those of us in the cheap / indoor / techno fuddy-duddy corner, there is the amazingly cheap GE-branded wired headset that has given me 4+ years of stellar service and great results. Used it on conference calls, podcasts and narrations. Connects to everything that still has a socket to connect to: TRRS, separate mic/headphone, even the weird micro-plug used by cordless phones. The best bit: $10 from Factory Direct. The important thing about any headset mic is to get it very close to, but just below, your lower lip. That way you get all the speech sounds, but none of the pops and clicks. Stewart
