pretty cheap decent mini-PC

It's 4x better than my desktop (in cpu and power consumption). Problem is all my monitors are DVI, so I have to get a new HDMI/DP monitor, which bumps up the price. On 2025-06-30 12:29, D. Hugh Redelmeier via Talk wrote:

DVI and HDMI are the same signal format, just a different connector. Well newer resolutions of course are faster signals on HDMI which DVI displays don't support, they only support the original HDMI speeds. So a simple DVI to HDMI cable is all that is needed. Now dual link DVI (like some 30" displays use) is a different story. HDMI is single link DVI compatible. -- Len Sorensen

The video format is the same but HDMI can also carry audio, which DVI can't. However, the mini PC that this topic is about has a 3.5mm audio out jack, so that shouldn't be a problem. -- Scott

Well some PC video cards came up with a way of hijacking some of the unused analog VGA pins I believe for digital audio when you connect a DVI to HDMI cable. I have done it, and it worked in my setup. But officially DVI definitely doesn't do audio. -- Len Sorensen

Again, not necessary for the subject PC, but if you had a HDMI source and wanted to feed the video into a DVI monitor and also extract the HDMI audio, there are converter boxes that can do this. https://www.amazon.ca/TNP-HDMI-DVI-Converter-Audio/dp/B01MQYTUAK -- Scott

1. The computer is now sold out. It might re-appear. 2. others have explained how DVI -> HDMI is easy, up to 1920x1200 @ 60 Hz 3. monitors are very much a matter of personal preference and use cases. Having said that, one can pay ~$400 for a ~40" UltraHD TV to use as a monitor. Utter luxury. (Some TVs are better than others at being monitors.) 4. If you are going to use it a lot, you might find it worth paying a bit more to get a better mini-PC.
