cheap Raspberry Pi, today only

Newegg.ca has two or three "Shell Shocker(TM)" deals each day. Sometimes they are pretty good. Today, one is a Raspberry Pi 3 Model B for $42.90 + shipping and tax. Ground shipping is $7.99 but you can probably use "InPost" shipping which should be free. InPost will ship it to a locker of your choosing. For me, the locker is very convenient (in a Loblaws site a short walk from home). Canada Robotix (a store in Markham) sells the RPi3 for $53.99. Creatron on College sells it for $53.50.

I'm very happy with the RPi 3 that I bought recently from https://thepihut.com/ (taking advantage of the post-Brexit drop in the pound ;-) ) I use it as a cord-cutting media centre. Handles Plex Media Server, samba, sab and torrent agents without breaking a sweat. Sometimes Plex's transcoding can bog it down but otherwise quite nice. On 4 August 2016 at 18:57, D. Their £30 is still ~ $51*, then you add shipping and the odds-on chance of getting hit with $16 of sales tax plus fee. Still, would be a good day to buy one, as there was just an official announcement of booting without an SD card today: https://www.raspberrypi.org/blog/pi-3-booting-part-i-usb-mass-storage-boot/ Stewart *: though that price may include the UK's 20% sales tax, as it's almost always included in advertised prices

Agreed that the Newegg deal is great for those who can take advantage. One small warning -- the RPi3 recommends a 2.5A USB power adapter which is more than iPad chargers (and WAY more than most cellphone chargers) put out. What I bought at Pi-Hut was a kit that included the "official" RPi power supply <https://thepihut.com/collections/raspberry-pi-power-supplies/products/official-raspberry-pi-universal-power-supply> (with the added benefit of four interchangeable international plugs). The case that comes part of the kit <https://thepihut.com/collections/raspberry-pi-cases/products/raspberry-pi-case> is wonderfully straightforward and simple (though I will always have a soft spot for the hand-done ones Scott made some years back. How does this compare with Creatron (on College)? Always good to support the local store if you can and the price is not way out of line. Peter -- Peter Hiscocks Syscomp Electronic Design Limited, Toronto http://www.syscompdesign.com USB Oscilloscope and Waveform Generator 647-839-0325

Scott's cases were the best when I picked up my first pi's, still using a couple around the house. Here's one playing dev server: <https://www.psema4.ca/images/chip_and_pi.jpg> I've not grabbed any Pi 3's yet but do have a 2 - and successfully ran some WebGL test scenes exported from Unity 3D. Great little machines. =D -- Scott Elcomb @psema4 http://www.pirateparty.ca/

Thanks for the plug Eric. I had fun cutting those cases, it was a time when there was really nothing else on the market. The design was Adafruit's, but they released the source files. I was doing up batches as the first pi's started to circulate. I even did up two batches in blue and red, with the Fedora Remix logo. Sent those off to CDoT at Seneca, who were working on the Raspberry Release of Fedora. I hear many of those ended up being shown off a press events. Now there are many injection modeled cases at good prices. -- Scott Sullivan

I picked up a Pi2 not long before I found out about the 3. I'm not going to get a 3 any time soon. I did notice the Pihut is listing Zero's as available. I think their price including shipping may be better than adafruit. Trying to get a Zero via adafruit is a matter of timing as they are in stock and out again so fast it makes your head spin. -- Cheers! I think the main advantage of the 3 is adding wifi and bluetooth. So for some tasks that would be useful. -- Len Sorensen
