Is the TD-8616 DSL modem a good choice?

How does this DSL modem compare with others? <http://www.tplink.ca/en/products/details/cat-15_TD-8616.html> Any problems using it with Linux? -- Chris F.A. Johnson, <http://cfajohnson.com>

This is a very basic DSL modem, I've used it with a Raspberry Pi router running OpenWRT with no problems whatsover. Alex. On 20/01/16 09:25 PM, Chris F.A. Johnson wrote:

Going from 2 year old recall here. When I was working for an ISP we did deploy these for some of our customers. I was using one myself for most of a year. At one point near the end I had signal quality issue that a 2wire modem powered through. Very shortly after that I switch to VDSL2. Linux wise they were just fine. Last I knew the Toronto Free Net was deploying these for the majority of customers which were not already bringing their own modems. -- Scott Sullivan

In 2009 I evaluated three TP-Link modems: 8610 8616 8841 The 8610 doesn't even have telnet access. The 8616 is ok under good conditions, but is useless for diagnosing or addressing problems. The 8841 is much better, if you want to know what's going on. If you are interested, the 8841 runs a rudimentary GNU/Linux, accessible via telnet, so you can (automatically) monitor and analyze your ADSL line condition. If you are connected to a CO via long wire (rather than to a nearby Remote), this may be important. --Peter
