Hi folks, Late new year wishes all around. I ask the question because I believe? someone posted a list of service alternatives a while back. Up until late December I was using theoldgnews.com Apparently google discovered the service though. Anyone know of a comparative alternative? Cheers, Kare

Hi all. I consume a lot of news and podcasts on both mobile and desktops. I have found Feedly to be a great resource at aggregation of RSS feeds and other sources. Its Android app is good if not spectacular and my podcast player can import directly from it. There is a free account that will be enough for many, but I upgraded to the paid one. Be patient and eventually you will encounter a sale or promo that lowers the cost, but even at full price I find it good value. (These days I am, when I can, choosing to pay for my apps and services rather than depend on data-mining to give me free stuff, but that's a different story) If your news needs are limited you could get by on the CBC, BBC or CNN apps, but they don't offer enough for me. Google News has been replaced by a news component of its omnibus Google Now service on Android, but I like neither its news selections nor its privacy concerns. One nice apps with a daily summary of the world's significant events is Espresso by The Economist. - Evan On Wed, 23 Jan 2019 at 16:35, Karen Lewellen via talk <talk@gtalug.org> wrote:

Hi Evan, granted I prefer my phones to be as dumb as possible, I do not own a smart phone for many reasons. I do however as a reporter prefer to draw from as many diverse news sources as I can, articles not podcasts. My efforts to visit feedly, www.feedly.com/ produce a failure to load error, regardless of browser I try. Am I unlikely to experience anything productive here if only using a desktop? Must you use their software to reach the news content? Sitting in the back of tech class, smiles. Karen On Thu, 24 Jan 2019, Evan Leibovitch wrote:

very strange. I just re-tested on my desktops with no problem. Try this URL: https://feedly.com/ Maybe they don't use 'www' anymore :-) - Evan

Hi Evan, The heart and soul of PC is the personal. I am thrilled it works for you. I however am still getting the same oops statement about feedly not loading. I will send them an e-mail with questions. Cheers, Kare On Thu, 24 Jan 2019, Evan Leibovitch wrote:

Odd, Chrome 71.0.3578.98 (Official Build) (64-bit) on Fedora FC27 went to https://feedly.com/i/welcome from www.feedly.com I don't like it, but it does seem to work. --dave On 2019-01-24 3:56 p.m., Karen Lewellen via talk wrote:

I use theoldreader.com. it costs money after a certain number of feeds, but I've never hit that. It may be more screen-reader friendly than Feedly Cheers Stewart

Oh that worked just fine. Will be an interesting experiment as I have never used feeds before. Thanks! On Thu, 24 Jan 2019, Stewart Russell via talk wrote:

Hi Dave, Testing chrome as you did would due to the adaptive technology required stimulate the dizzy centres of my brain...literary. so, I will e-mail them asking about low graphics environments. could be too Java dependent for my use. Kare On Thu, 24 Jan 2019, David Collier-Brown via talk wrote:
