Onavo VPN: Facebook wants your privacy

Onavo is a VPN feature that Facebook offers. It turns out that Facebook spies on this VPN traffic. And, once installed, spies on your traffic even if the VPN is turned off! Wow. I don't think that it works on Linux (except Android Linux). <https://www.findvpn.com/facebook-onavo-vpn-collects-user-data-even-when-it-is-disabled/> <https://gizmodo.com/do-not-i-repeat-do-not-download-onavo-facebook-s-vam-1822937825> <https://techcrunch.com/2018/02/12/facebook-starts-pushing-its-data-tracking-onavo-vpn-within-its-main-mobile-app/> (My daughter pointed this out to me.)

I have never used Facebook, so I'm safe. I also use OpenVPN to connect to my home network. It also provides IPv6, even though I may be using my computer in an IPv4 only location.

Lovely. On the happier end of the spectrum, Firefox has an extension to combat Facebook data collection. https://blog.mozilla.org/firefox/facebook-container-extension/ -- When confronted by a difficult problem, solve it by reducing it to the question, "How would the Lone Ranger handle this?"

it is not just facebook that is (or has become) evil. tech has become an all out arms race and it is impossible to avoid any of the top 5-10 multinationals as they have infiltrated everything. my honest opinion is that it will not become better, sure, it may become less discussed/trending/popular to discuss how big tech has infiltrated our very thoughts, but it will not get any better. how does the average person avoid amazon? how to boycott apple? how does anyone get google out of their life? now done with facebook? really? instagram much? whatsapp, vr? (all facebook...) too little, too late, too powerful. so whatever anyone says is wasting time and is meaningless. 2c Andre
