PHD-VRX2 Linux-based PVR to scrap

I have a PHD-VRX2 Linux-based PVR that is misbehaving and I've replaced it with a ChannelMaster unit, so the PHD is being scrapped. It boots up (the display says 'boot') and then after a few seconds, it reboots itself again. If you're handy, you might want to have a go at fixing it. Or check with the company if they can fix it for a reasonable price. Or reprogram it with Myth TV ;). PrimeDTV Technologies, Inc. Anaheim, CA 92807 Tel: (714) 630 630- -6899 www.primedtv.com I have the user manual and can send it on request. Or you can get it here: http://www.epvision.com/HDTVSTB/phdvrx2main.htm Anyone want to take this away? That looks pretty nifty. If I could get such a thing working again my father in law might like it (since he uses ATSC for all his television in Montreal). -- Len Sorensen

Since I like to hack away at older equipment and keep it workable I had a look at the website. There was a firmware update in August 2014, perhaps this is what is needed here. Sent from mobile. On Fri, Jan 22, 2016 at 03:39:34PM -0500, phiscock@ee.ryerson.ca wrote:

Russell - I did that software upgrade and it seemed to be successful at the time, so I think it's some other problem. Peter

Well could e interesting to poke at it a bit to see. It probably has a serial console inside somewhere. -- Len Sorensen

I get the impression it does run linux (although maybe it doesn't). I sure can't find anywhere that they offer GPL sources for the GPL bits it likely contains. Why am I not surprised. -- Len Sorensen

Well I see alsa, linux kernel, busybox, uClibc, a lot of directFB stuff, some broadcom wifi proprietary kernel modules, ntfs-3g, etc. Tons of GPL stuff and some ugly broacdom stuff. -- Len Sorensen

I presume that neither let you hack the firmware. The PHD-VRX2 page looks a bit unmaintained. For example, it mentions Zap2it which got renamed some time ago. The PHD-VRX2 documentention mentions MPEG2 while DVR+ documentation mentions MPEG4. I got notice of a sale on DVR+ (I'm on their mailing list because I bought a few distribution amplifiers from them). CMVIP code at checkout gets $50 off. All prices are, of course, US$. I'm not even sure how good they are at shipping to Canada. Thanks for offering your PHD-VRX2 to the list!

Zap2it still exists with that name at the URL of zap2it.com -- Cheers! Kevin. http://www.ve3syb.ca/ |"Nerds make the shiny things that distract Owner of Elecraft K2 #2172 | the mouth-breathers, and that's why we're | powerful!" #include <disclaimer/favourite> | --Chris Hardwick

The ChannelMaster unit is physically much smaller - amazingly thin. And it has a much better user interface. Operating it is much simpler than the PHD-VRX2.

No. But the PHD-VRX2 is fairly obviously Linux based, so if you can figure out a way into the machine, you might be able to do that. -- Peter Hiscocks Syscomp Electronic Design Limited, Toronto http://www.syscompdesign.com USB Oscilloscope and Waveform Generator 647-839-0325
