Right to Repair Info Session Mon. Apr. 15

Hi folks, Sharing the below from an associate since the effort was discussed here. Karen ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Thu, 11 Apr 2019 18:02:40 -0400 From: Dahne Jobson <jmgmediagroup@gmail.com> Subject: Right to Repair Info Session Mon. Apr. 15 [Rescheduled] Thank you for your support and I look forward to seeing you on Monday! *The Right to Repair Info Session is Back On!* Hello CSI Community! MPP Michael Coteau – Don Valley East, is tabling legislation to extend the Consumer Protection Act to include the *Right to Repair Electronics Bill* and will be at *CSI Annex MONDAY APRIL 15, 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm, Mtg Rm #1* to explain his Bill and wants your comments and feedback! ------------------------------ Mr. Coteau’s Right to Repair Bill aims to compel manufacturers to give consumers and repair shops what they need to repair their electronics themselves without voiding warranties, encouraging new product purchases or requiring the consumer exclusive use of the manufacturer’s repair services. Techniques employed by some manufacturers to extend the income cycle of “their” devices include, the gluing in of key components to prevent refurbishment and creating unique screws that require special tools that only the manufacturer has access to. (*Fun Fact: *Once you buy something, it’s *yours*!*)* The Right to Repair affects devices such as cell phones, computers, cars, farm machinery, and household items – washing machines and dishwashers. It also impacts small business, which are at risk of paying exorbitant fees to become registered resellers/technicians or going out of business entirely. The website, the Citizen Truth, features the article, ‘Is Apple Holding Their Consumers Hostage to Unfair Repair Prices? <https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fcitizentruth.org%2Fapple-versus-third-party-repair-techs%2F&data=02%7C01%7Cljanbazian%40liberal.ola.org%7Cf246d49ea62645b0a02708d6b10e990a%7C6b9fd2ec77a64ae0822a6bb9108fb274%7C0%7C0%7C636891073591894030&sdata=vCQsj5Ul6I4bWsi8162pAr3fHHKeD5zbDGXjEXqBZxo%3D&reserved=0> *’, *that references a 2018 CBC undercover video, ‘Apple Store hidden camera footage exposes high cost for repairs’ <https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cbc.ca%2Fnews%2Fthenational%2Fapple-store-hidden-camera-footage-exposes-high-cost-for-repairs-1.4867532&data=02%7C01%7Cljanbazian%40liberal.ola.org%7Cf246d49ea62645b0a02708d6b10e990a%7C6b9fd2ec77a64ae0822a6bb9108fb274%7C0%7C0%7C636891073591894030&sdata=htdU5RXXUqQ3aYcroYdkp5NtDPVpUNHoxHgprg1RJOw%3D&reserved=0>, exposing the extent of consumers’ vulnerability. An Apple customer seeking a remedy for their broken computer was quoted $1200 by the Apple Store rep, but had it repaired at an “unauthorized dealer” for between $75-$150 - the cost of the part, not the labour. *At an even greater cost to the consumer is the environmental impact of the rising amounts of electronic waste entering landfills.* A 2017 United Nations report, ‘Electronic waste poses ‘growing risk’ to environment, human <https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fnews.un.org%2Fen%2Fstory%2F2017%2F12%2F639312-electronic-waste-poses-growing-risk-environment-human-health-un-report-warns&data=02%7C01%7Cljanbazian%40liberal.ola.org%7Cf246d49ea62645b0a02708d6b10e990a%7C6b9fd2ec77a64ae0822a6bb9108fb274%7C0%7C0%7C636891073591904039&sdata=jPkRgvUNL3DJ0teLBaoyJPSEjl%2BRSblUYw7oxEh13WM%3D&reserved=0> health’, warns that the growing volume of e-waste is an “urgent issue” in an increasing digital-dependent society. Thanks for following up further, Karen. I wonder if you can look into more precisely where they're meeting on April 15th? It's less evident than it perhaps ought to be. It appears they are holding it at the CSI Annex, at 720 Bathurst, but a browse of events on the CSI website doesn't list it. Which is a bit confusing. -- When confronted by a difficult problem, solve it by reducing it to the question, "How would the Lone Ranger handle this?"

Hi Christopher, Your tag line is a treasure! As for the event, let me explain. Not all things which take place at CSI spaces get listed on the site, especially if held by a member instead of being sponsored by cSI itself. In those cases, asking at the Welcome desk for the location, in this instance the Annex location, will get you the room number where said event is taking place. Does that help?
