Greetings I have been trying to set up an older Dell poweredge 2950II for use as a NAS box (and possibly some other things. Running into a problem. I used one hard drive from the array for some much needed other purpose for a few weeks and now when I wanted to put it back into the server well there are problems. I can't get the bios to accept the '<ctrl> R' input. When in the PD Mgmt area when I use F2 to get into the hard disk area I can make the front panel light blink (or not) but I cannot get any other of the functions to highlight. The cursor just doesn't want to move! So - - - Does anyone know how to kick the bios in the seat of the pants to get the hardware raid to work? Other option - - - drastic and expensive is to remove the 32GB of ECC ram in the box and setup a new server box. (I don't want to do this but if the other one won't work - - - well I need something that will!) Ideas - - - suggestions - - - - please? TIA Dee

Are you trying to setup your own 'nas' or a distro thats has been setup for NAS usage? I'm running OpenMediaVault on a HP Micro server. Sorry can't answer you directly on that box. On Wed, Nov 11, 2015 at 4:47 PM, o1bigtenor <o1bigtenor@gmail.com> wrote:

I have some questions, ideas, and suggestions. Is control r required to configure the raid? Is it that you can't "catch" the control r ? Is it that it goes by too quickly? Is the drive detected? Is the drive connected to an on-board raid card or an add-in card? Is the drive SAS or sata? You could try installing on a different non raid disk. Then use the vendor tools to access and configure the raid card using the user space tools. David On Wed, Nov 11, 2015, 4:58 PM Digiital aka David <digiital@gmail.com> wrote:

And for what it's worth I really like freenas which is a bsd based Nas solution that has a single sqlite3 file as its config and is meant to be run off a USB key .... so that all of your drives can be "data drives". It has a Web gui. Has some cool plug-ins like dockers and sick beard. And best of all it uses zfs , the Cadillac of filesystems IMHO. I've been running on it reliably for a couple of years now. Thanks - - - FreeNas was one of the contenders that I looked at when I started working on setting up the NAS box. There were a few things that tipped me toward OpenMediaVault - - among them being able to use other systems besides zfs (JFS is one that I was recommended for use with database usage), the integrated (not totally sure how to set it up though) VirtualBox stuff is probably what tipped things in OpenMediaVault's favor. Great to hear your recommendation though - - - will keep it in mind for reference! Any suggestions for a great backup system? Dee

Is control r required to configure the raid?
Yes.

No, just that the control R key sequence is not accepted by the bios - - - so one can't go into the array control and do whatever.
Is the drive detected?
Yes.
Is the drive connected to an on-board raid card or an add-in card?
Its an add-in card. Changing it isn't very cheap and changing it to something that would be fairly up to date is sort of pricey. (I was offered a fairly new server (refurbished) at a fairly good price that would be cheaper than the new hardware raid board.)
Is the drive SAS or sata?
SATA.
You could try installing on a different non raid disk. Then use the vendor tools to access and configure the raid card using the user space tools.
There is no way to install a hard drive that isn't controlled by the hardware raid controller. Thanks for the ideas. Wish I knew something about the bios - - - Dell's information assumes that everything is working. I'm wondering if a dead battery on the raid controller might be the issue. Don't really know how to find out though! Thanks again!! Dee

I tried a few of the NAS distros and really liked how OMV operated and didn't have a lot of overhead or overly complex . I'm running PLEX on it to organize my media. OMV has a really easy admin setup to control users folders and permissions. There are several community addons that you can install beside the default ones. This is outside of what you may want to do but I will give you a quick rundown on my setup. I have a VPS running in the US with SICK BEARD. Sickbeard is used to grab my TV shows, subscribe to the TV shows I enjoy. It grabs the torrent files and I have a script running on it to build a RSS feed from those torrent files it's collected(the torrent file , not the actual tv show video file) Now on my OMV box I have a script running to grab the torrent files from the RSS feed. And the Bittorrent client on OMV downloads the tv shows. Once the TV show is done downloading I then have another script run to call FILEBOT to move the downloading shows and sorted into their own TV Show Folder.
