Where can I buy short ethernet and USB-to-microUSB cables?

Two items I need to buy... 1) I have more devices than ports on my 4-port ST546 ADSL modem/router. I have a multi-port bridge sitting right next to it. A 6-foot ethernet cable connecting the 2 is a waste, and contributes to "crow's-nest". A 12 or 18 inch ethernet cable would do just fine. 2) Ditto for a short USB-to-microUSB adapter. A 6-footer is OK for my desktop. But when I'm travelling, and offloading smartphone photos to my laptop, a 6-foot cable is clumsy. -- Walter Dnes <waltdnes@waltdnes.org>

Buy, or find someone with, a crimping tool and a short Ethernet cable is easy. Use, or find someone with, a soldering iron and some heat-shrink tubing to shorten a USB-to-microUSB cable. -- Scott

Short cables are available. You can try the usual suspects, (Sayal, Canada Computers etc.) or search on line. Or, as Scott mentioned, making Ethernet cables is fairly easy, once you get the hang of it. If possible, use stranded cable for patch cords.

I wasn't expecting it, but Canada Computers does have them in-store, so I don't have to order online and pick up later http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=1340_1347_1349&item_id=075518 I have a dentist's appointment for teeth-scraping on Friday, and the office is withing walking distance of the Toronto North York Canada Computers, so I'll probably drop by after my cleaning. -- Walter Dnes <waltdnes@waltdnes.org>

My favorite cable place in town is infinitecables.com in Markham. Cat 5/6 cables in any length, any colour. Power cables too. Lots of USB, but I don't know about shorter lengths. Otherwise monoprice.com might be a good place to check. Don't know if inifinitecables stocks 6 inch cat 5, but monoprice does. Hope that helps - cheers! | From: John Sellens <jsellens@syonex.com> | Otherwise monoprice.com might be a good place to check. <http://www.cablesonsale.ca/index.php/> seems to sell monoprice products and have local pickup in Richmond Hill (Yonge and 16th). I don't imagine that they are "authorized", but that's probably OK. I've never dealt with them so this isn't a recommendation. ===== Lots of stores probably have the cables you want. Here's a 1 ft cable: <http://www.ncix.com/detail/ion-cables-1ft-red-rj45-42-33165-1015.htm> <http://www.ncix.com/detail/ion-cables-1ft-black-rj45-5c-33169.htm> Here's a 2 ft cable: <http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=1340_1347_1349&item_id=079149> I didn't look for USB cables.

According to their website homepage
Cat5e & Cat6 patch cables available in 10 colours. Lengths ranging from 8 inch to 100 feet.
That looks like what I need. Thanks for the pointer. I'll check more local sites first, especially where I don't need to order ahead of time. But if necessary, I can get there from Dufferin+Steeles via YRT. -- Walter Dnes <waltdnes@waltdnes.org>
