Hi folks, One thing about the lockdown ending is that I must hunt a new place..which means proper packing of my computers and monitors. So two questions since I must order on line. First, what is the best sized box for a tower so that there is not too much room? second, I have one older imac that is rather heavy..but important. If this should not be boxed given the weight, how should it be packed, or padded? what about those monitor slip covers, I have flat screen ones now. Thanks for any ideas, Karen

Last time I moved, almost 28 years ago, I didn't bother with boxes for that sort of thing. I just put them in my car, instead of the truck. BTW, if I look I might find some boxes I haven't yet unpacked after the previous move 40 years ago. ;-) I recently threw out some stuff from that era. :-)
I always put my computers on the car too, the tower got nicely put behind the driver seat, and the monitor got on the backseat, with a seatbelt around it. Put the screen on the seat, strap it with the seatbelt, and they are good to go. You can put some pillows around them, but unless you drive fast over a pothole or jump speedbumps, they will be fine. well...the blindness experience, at least for the moment, means driving, is not an option for me. Do still have boxes packed from several prior moves though. Kare On Tue, 8 Jun 2021, Mauro Souza via talk wrote:

Much depends on who will be moving your stuff, and how they will be moving it, which may depend on how far they are moving it if you are calling on professional movers. Oops, I trimmed too much text. Just before this first question you said you will be ordering online. Did you mean ordering the packing material online, or reserving a moving company online? If you meant you will be hiring a professional mover with insurance, ask them how to pack stuff. They may require that they pack themselves anything they move in order for the item to be insured. I have moved my home many times in my life. The last time I moved I hired someone. I packed anything it would be hard to damage, like clothes, bedding and books, and let them handle the more easily damageable items because of their insurance requirements. I also organized the move of a company I worked for at one time. The details of the agreement were way above my paygrade, so I'm not sure of the motivations were the same as in my personal move, but it was the same in terms of what we packed and what we left for the movers to pack. Everyone put there own files and pencils and staplers and organizing trays in a box, but anything electronic got left on the desk for the movers. So, much detail to ask that you give more details of how this stuf will get shifted.
second, I have one older imac that is rather heavy..but important. If this should not be boxed given the weight, how should it be packed, or padded? what about those monitor slip covers, I have flat screen ones now.
See above :) If you end up needing to pack yourself, and it's your college buddies and family coming over to help, let us know, and we can maybe suggest some ways to keep your stuff safe. Znoteer the nomad
Whether you're boxing them or not, my advice is to use those plastic shipping wrap. It looks like cling wrap for food, but much stronger and thicker. It prevents scratches and holds stuff together. It reduces the amount of padding needed, hence the number of boxes. Surprisingly, you can even wrap clothes, big ones separately, small ones together. Generally speaking computers are fairly resilient when not powered up. The disk drive heads park and are not on the platters. So it takes a real hit to cause them harm. With real abuse the cooling fans can sometimes fall off the CPU heat sinks. But other than that I have found that if the box is not dented or bent it will work. If you toss the computer in a box with some clothing on the bottom and around it then it should be safe but for someone really crazy. In high-school some friends got a job helping to pack for a costco like business. They use to play a game. "Keep the box clean". The idea was that you would push the box off the shelves in such a way that it would land flat destroying the internal things like televisions but not show any external damage. So long as your movers are not in the same kind of mindset as my high-school friends then you should be just fine. On 2021-06-08 3:27 p.m., William Park via talk wrote:
