Fwd: Linux Distros available in Toronto
We got this email on our general mailing list. Does anyone know where you can purchase Linux DVDs in Toronto. -------- Original Message -------- Subject: Linux Distros available in Toronto Date: Mon, 27 Jul 2015 12:20:28 -0400 From: [reacted] To: hi@gtalug.org Hello. I am newly interested in Linux and it's variations, and am looking to purchase a distro on DVD.....trouble is, it seems that I cannot find any vendors locally, in Toronto that has them available...and my "google-fu" is usually pretty good...it was while searching that I found your User Group. I can find sellers in the US, but would prefer to do this local...and "The Linux Store" seems to be off line...Linux Cafe is no more. Could you point me in the right direction as to where I could get hold of linxu distros in Toronto on CD/DVD at reasonable cost? In particular, I am looking to get hold of Knoppix Live DVD v7.4.2, as that seems most suitable for me based on my reading. Your assistance would be greatly appreciated...hope I am not imposing on you by this request. Thank you.
There must be reason for the question. But, it's cheaper and faster to just burn it yourself. I doubt there is any local place, because it's obsolete by the time you stock it. Official Ubuntu DVDs are another matter. :-) -- William On Mon, Jul 27, 2015 at 12:27:49PM -0400, Myles Braithwaite wrote:

Maybe someone could burn it for this person and hand it to them at the next meeting?

This is a business area that has died, for fairly good reason. At one time, Internet bandwidth was rather more precious, as you were most likely accessing it via using a modem and your telephone land line. (Some of our younger members may not remember back that far!!) And so it made sense that businesses could make a viable business out of mastering CDs for Linux distributions and selling thousands of copies that would be salable for a year or two, saving usage of expensive/scarce Internet connections. I recall InfoMagic with their 10 CD set (with several distributions), LinuxMall, and there being various others, that came about in the mid-1990s, selling all manner of Linux distribution CDs. They started disappearing in about 2001-2002. Internet connectivity has gotten so vastly much cheaper and more available that this business model became uneconomic. I suggest asking what distribution the original poster is interested in, and seeing if someone can burn a DVD and bring it to the next meeting? That would be what *would* work, today.

Despite the question being obsolete... What about a book store? (I guess the answer is almost obsolete too...) In Jan/Feb 2007 when Microsoft put ads all over St. George Station for Vista's "The Wow is Now" campaign, this dissatisfied Windows user got so annoyed that I went off impulsively searching for a way to try out this mythical "linux" one evening. Sure, I probably should have gone online instead... but truth is I just took the subway a couple extra stops to Yorkdale, went to Indigo, looked in the magazine and computer books section. There are a couple magazines with discs, but I settled on some comprehensive guide to Ubuntu that came with the most recent LTS on DVD. I'm not sure that you could find somewhere in Toronto that sells DVDs with GNU/Linux on them, but I bet a store with a wide enough selection of computer books and magazines will sell one that comes with a DVD. But yeah, +1 to just burning the ISO, or better yet, using a USB flash drive...

The first version of Linux I ever got my hands on was Yggdrasil Linux. I bought it at the UofT bookstore in the fall of 1994. It was the first and last time I have been to that bookstore. I'm not avoiding the place. I just haven't found myself in the area again. With so many distros available for download on line I wouldn't expect (m)any stores to carry Linux CDs/DVDs for sale. Most are out-of-date in six months time when the next release is made available. -- Cheers! Well, if this is going to be *that* kind of party... +1! I selected that same Yggdrasil distro at the same time. I recall doing an eenie meenie miney moe between that and that BSD package right next to it :-) I recall being impressed at there being almost 1.3G of software on a <700M CD-ROM. I've recently been trying to boot Yggdrasil under KVM-qemu - yes, for nostalgic purposes. Not trivial - the lack of an ISA bus is my first problem. EISA even... Cheers, Mike

Ditto. Looking at my back-issues, I was at the UofT bookstore in 1995 buying 4-distro releases from InfoMagic -- installing Slackware from them because of Bob Dobbs. The store had piles of recent issues of Linux Journal for sale as well. I was buying official Slackware releases there up to 2005 after which the well ran dry. Probably because of distribution over the net. Mel.

They're free, just need to arrange a transfer of goods. The Ubuntu DVDs are Live DVDs, so they'll run Linux to try it out or to rescue a system just like a Knoppix release (but Knoppix isn't encumbered with the Unity desktop, so there's that). I have a few DVDs remaining too, but wasn't planning on being in Toronto for a while... - --Bob. You can download Knoppix here: ftp://ftp.knoppix.nl/pub/os/Linux/distr/knoppix-dvd/KNOPPIX_V7.4.1DVD-2014-09-15-EN.iso and burn it yourself. I have official Ubuntu 14.04 LTS Server Edition and 14.04 LTS Desktop Edition which you are welcome to pick up and like Bob said it's FREE! YOu can reach me on 647-709-9269. Thanks - Aruna ( Who after many distros swears Debian is rock-solid, stable and instead of going bald due to pulling out my hair I have actually started to grow new hair :)
There are few circumstances these days in which a commercial vendor would find mass distribution of Linux DVDs to be commercially viable. The business model has gone the way of Blockbuster. Consider that a growing number of laptops and even desktops don't even have DVD drives built in, and encourage the use of USB sticks that are reusable; I have a specific stick that always has the most current version of Mint. not every system has a drive anymore, but most of them can boot off a USB stick.

Check the internet to see which distributions are up to date. Visit Chapters, and check the computer section for Linux Bibles. These, often, are quite up to date. If they are not up to date, this person can download the latest distribution, and they still have a useful book. -- Howard Gibson hgibson@eol.ca howard.gibson@teledyneoptech.com jhowardgibson@gmail.com http://home.eol.ca/~hgibson

Chapters has been getting useless for computer books, ever since Heather Reisman decided to dumb down the stores and turn them into gift shops. Chapters used to have an excellent computer section, which I frequented regularly. Now, I can't tell you when I was last in one, as there's so little of interest now.

It's no surprise, by now they probably sell more computer books online than in stores. What you'll see on the floor is impulse buys, best sellers, childrens'' books and consumer stuff (ie, fashion, DIY, health, humour). I'm not at all shocked that the tech catalogue is moving online, as are others where price sensitivity is more important than immediacy of purchase. You can "invert" the immediacy by going to on-line first, then paper. There are a couple of Java books I have that were available the instant I needed them, and I read significant amounts on a %$#$$!%! screen that instant and printed out several snippets while the book travelled from a warehouse somewhere to my house. Once it arrived, I read the whole thing, on the subway as usual. Ditto for a security engineering book, and some few others. --dave On 07/28/2015 10:48 AM, Evan Leibovitch wrote:

Chapters/Indigo has always been horrible for anything programming related unless you want to teach yourself C++ in 21 days. I found the Library a better resource for programming books.

My Linux journey began 14 years ago with a visit to Chapters and the "Linux Desktop Starter Kit" by John Lathrop. Fun times.
