"free" physical objects

Hi everyone, a few years back(before COVID) I participated in a very interesting GTALUG meeting. One of the participants talked about some "free" objects/artifacts that are circulating in our world and people can keep them for certain time. Each object has an id and the temporary "guardian" informs a portal that they have it in their possession using this id. Does anyone remembers this conversation? Does anyone know this project? Thank you for your time stopping by my message. Best, -- Vasileios Papadiamantopoulos, PhD Arch

That sounds a bit like tracking tokens used in geocaching. Have a look at geocaching.com for more information. -- Cheers! Thank you for looking into my message and taking the time to respond. I looked the geocaching project. This is more like a scavenger hunt game. The project that I remember was more of a proof of concept for independent "free" artifacts. I would assume that someone is creating or buying an artifact, register it to the platform and then set it free to the world. Items can be passed on to people for some time. It was an interesting idea testing the waters with independent artifacts. If someone remembers anything more please let me know. Best, Vasileios Papadiamantopoulos, PhD Arch
