Are you wanting to replace Roger's entirely or just get phone coverage in the US? Freedom Mobile has a $20/month add-on to roam in the US with 1GB of data. Their regular roaming fee without that add-on is only $0.25/minute. If you can manage with hopping between wifi hotspots, voip is very effective with voicemail.

I may want to ditch them entirely. Not sure yet. I'm pissed at the moment so may not be rational.

The only problem with Freedom Mobile is you need a phone that supports AWS frequencies, so if your current phone doesn't support that then it means buying a new phone. A few years ago an additional problem was losing a signal in dead zones, but that seems to almost never happen to me any more. On 3 April 2018 at 08:34, Dave Cramer <davecramer@gmail.com> wrote:

Unfortunately I live in Orangeville. Does Freedom have coverage up here ? Dave Cramer

https://www.freedommobile.ca/network-and-coverage/coverage has the coverage maps... but, no, it seems Orangeville isn't covered yet. On 3 April 2018 at 08:48, Dave Cramer <davecramer@gmail.com> wrote:

If your phone supports WiFi calling, you don't even need a separate VoIP app. Your regular phone number will work wherever you have WiFi access.

First, the phone has to support WiFi calling and it has to be enabled. The phone will then use WiFi calling when connected to WiFi. One thing I've noticed is it's smart enough to know when the WiFi connection does not support it. For example, at the Mississauga Library, it won't use WiFi calling as the library network doesn't allow much beyond web browsers. WiFi calling uses the same methods as Voice over LTE. That is it uses SIP/RTP in an IPSec VPN. So, if a network won't pass IPSec, WiFi calling won't work over it. One curious thing I've noticed is it always uses IPv4, even when IPv6 is avaialble. Rogers provides IPv6 on both cell and cable networks. Also, WiFi calling provides seamless transfer between WiFi and cell networks. I don't know what the deal is with Chattr. I'm on Rogers. You'll have to call them and ask. On 04/03/2018 10:23 AM, D. Hugh Redelmeier via talk wrote:

When I'm traveling to the US I just load up my Roam Mobility Card before I leave. It's a MUCH better deal than using one of the CDN providers with roam option. https://roammobility.com/plans This company uses T-Mobile network. I have not had a issue with coverage(a few yrs ago in VT it was pretty spotty, but other wise when I drive to NJ there is zero problems) At some point in the past you could choose the City where you got a number from. Now it's a random location when you signup. 512MB per-day is plenty and if you do use it up it just slows down to 2G speeds afterwards. For Emails and GPS it's plenty. Full Disclosure: I worked for my telecommunication suggestion previously. There is a local company called KnowRoaming that sells both hard and soft sim options that can operate in any and all countries. KnowRoaming is a Canadian MVNO operating via a wholly owned American subsidiary Telecom North America which operates as a full MNO in the USA. The quality of service won't be the same you'd get on our national carriers but this product would give you the option to use either Robbers or Bellus at your own will. Hopefully this is an option that fits your needs! Regards, Andrew Paolucci ‐‐‐‐‐‐‐ Original Message ‐‐‐‐‐‐‐ On 3 April 2018 10:57 AM, Tim Tisdall via talk <talk@gtalug.org> wrote:

Take a look at the monthly plans. They have a $40 for 30 days plan
that looks pretty good.

I will endorse KnowRoaming. I started using their SIM (in a second phone) for my travels to Europe and Asia. I pay-as-I-go for roaming data, and have found the service works well at a reasonable price. I prefer using wifi (on my primary phone), but when I'm lost and need a connection, I don't think that I've every paid more than $20 for a week's use (and it's usually $10). My main phone is the Freedom Mobile, on a legacy offer that covered Ontario only for $30 per month. When I go to the U.S., I turn on the Ready-to-Go, and then turn it off when I return. The international roaming service on Freedom Mobile was much better, 3 or 4 years ago as Wind Mobile, than now. I first noticed that World Traveller didn't cover Ireland, then Finland, and then Austria. (UK and Germany, yes). Hence the switch to KnowRoaming, which works even in China. In the U.S., it's more convenient to maintain the primary Freedom phone number, so I don't use KnowRoaming there. This approach really optimizes for international roaming, at the expense of local service. I live in downtown Toronto, and still pay for a landline, so service interruptions are actually okay for me. Before the LTE was enabled late last year, I noticed that my service inside concrete buildings wasn't good, while friends could use Bell or Rogers without difficulty. I also have a free phone number on Fongo. When I'm travelling overseas and want to make a call back to Canada over wifi, sometimes Fongo works better than Google Hangout phone calls. Many heavy travellers I know just sign up for T Mobile in the US. Although you aren't supposed to be roaming all the time they have for years without issue. For a Canadian plan with good Is roaming check out freedom Sent from my iPhone

If you have a google phone then you could try google fi. It is 20usd a month, if you are on Wi-Fi, calling is free to us and Canada otherwise it is .20 a minute (while roaming). 1 gig of data is $10 but you get back what you didn’t use. Having said that it is google run, so would you trust them that much? Dhaval

Rogers keeps upping the prices for their TV and Internet services. The even doubled the maximum possible charge if you go over your allowed monthly Internet traffic. My family has thought about going with someone other than Rogers but there isn't an available alternative, yet. -- Cheers!
