finding referbished cellphones?
Hi everyone, I intend asking a question in Evan's journey thread too..finding this process quite interesting. We talked about cell phone hunting a bit back..the 3g network remains, but not for much longer. After doing research with the gari database, www.gari.info I am hoping to locate an LG Wine..challenge is where? Perhaps eBay? Searching is a bit of a dance. anyone have positive kijiji stories, or Facebook marketplace? I am not on Facebook, but will staff someone to manage it if there is a firm option. The data is recent enough that hopefully finding the phone will resonate. It seems my xp3 plus hope is a bit dashed. when updating the phone, the ability to hear things like text and menu options privately was removed..speech blasts out the back of the phone. Cheers, Karen

There are (at least) two phones from LG that go by the name Wine; the Wine Smart (model D486) and the Wine Smart 2 (model H410). Which model are you interested in, or do you care? https://www.lg.com/us/cell-phones/lg-UN220-lg-wine https://www.lg.com/us/cell-phones/lg-lmy120um0auclpl-us-cellular-wine-2 -- Scott
Hi Scott, The wine 2 matches the gari record I found in terms of model number. Making it my preference, but to be forthright I would take either or both at this point. On Mon, 29 Sep 2025, Scott Allen wrote:

There is a seller on AliExpress offering it. I don't know if it would be unlocked and have the frequencies required for Canada, though. https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005009983398640.html The original Wine is also available. https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005008842209474.html It takes some time for shipping from AliExpress and you would probably want to make sure they used a Canadian courier other than Canada Post, due to the strike. -- Scott
Those are both very old phones. Given their age, I don't know they'd support VoLTE, which is required with 3G shutting down. They are also Android v4 or 5, which means obsolete and many apps won't run on something that old, let alone no security updates for years. What is it about those phones that you want and can't find in another phone? At the very least you need a phone that supports 4G and VoLTE or better yet 5G. Hi James, Gari.info is the global accessibility research initiative. Like the w3c, the organization evaluates devices for rather a stunning about of accessibility features. I needed to get stateside staff to search the database, with only three or four devices even matching what my body requires. I do not use my phone for applications of any kind. No internet searches, I do not even send text messages. The wine 2 based on lg experience provides speech output at the ear, where you hold the phone for example. It uses nuance for its voice, which will not trigger a seizure. As a comparative example, since you are with rogers. If You have one of the current set top boxes, you can tern on a voice for navigation, its android. It also takes that voice less than 5 seconds of exposure to trigger a brain episode for me. while the xp3 plus does still have nuance, you cannot shift speech to the earpiece. I saw the phone at telus. Previously you could do this. Now, it is unclear if speech is even sent to the headphones..which for me would be profoundly unsafe to use in public due to blindness. the wine 2 does check out as volite and 4g 5g capable. Sorry if I misspelled that above. Great question, thanks for asking. One other possibility from the gari search is a Nokia 2760. However, I have no experience with the speech source used. I do know from google accessibility list discussions, that Nokia phones should firmly be tried first t before You buy though. Karen On Mon, 29 Sep 2025, James Knott via Talk wrote:

I was referring to being suitable after 3G is gone. I can't advise on your needs. At least the Flip is reasonably current. I don't know where you'd find one. I checked the Rogers site and they don't list them as either new or refurbished.

..well that would be a no then. Thanks for that resource. You would have to ask the gari people. Each phone indicates when the data was provided to the database. All my options are at least 2022 or so. Cannot remember who manages the Canadian wireless code of conduct site, but even they reference Gari. On Mon, 29 Sep 2025, James Knott wrote:

Only if it supports VoLTE.
If the following specifications for the LG Wine 2 LTE phone are correct, section "Mobile network technologies" says it supports LTE Cat 4, and from what I can gather Cat 4 includes VoLTE. https://www.devicespecifications.com/en/model/ec745384 -- Scott

From seller "Zenitech Original Phone Store" on AliExpress from Hong Kong, China, the LG Wine Smart II H410 is (all in Canadian dollars) $67.99 plus $7.60 shipping. You never know if you will have to pay taxes and duties on that until it clears Canada Customs (though I can't remember the last time I had to pay these, even on items priced higher than that). The $67.99 price includes the phone, charger and a data cable. For $76.38 you additionally get earphones, a user manual and a box, and it says "Accessories are new, but not original" They say a sale is coming on "Choice Day", Oct. 1, but don't say what the price will be then. I wouldn't bet on the battery capacity being very good and so would budget on having to buy a new one. It's available in blue, gold and red. They say there are only 4 left but I don't know if that's for each colour or total for all colours and whether it's accurate. They say it comes with a 1 year warranty but returning something to China for repair, replacement or refund often costs more than the item is worth. -- Scott

I see a few people claim they have done VoLTE with the LG H410. And many people that say it doesn't work for them. Could depend on the carrier, and also the problem that it only supports 1 LTE band, which is B7 at 2600MHz, and not every carrier uses that, and certainly it depends on your location whether they are using that band. Rogers seems to use it a lot, and Bell and Telus do at least in some places. I found a list from koodo with a lot of models they claim do support VoLTE, but I have no idea if any of those models are useful. I wouldn't be surprised if all of them are typical touch screen only smart phones. https://www.koodomobile.com/en/help/volte?srsltid=AfmBOorWijpqEP-6PL4NOVkyGY... -- Len Sorensen
Hi Lenn, Thanks once more. Your information feeds my sense that I will plan to move my chattr number to the new device. Will check this list, honestly touch screen is not my biggest challenge, its what the phone uses to speak. The IOS systems is one of the most accessible platforms one can find..for everyone else laughs. I mean I have an iPhone 5 that might not trigger the squirrels, and with the overlays Tellus claims exists on their accessibility page, I might be fine. Its allot older if that resonates. For now I will just get the wine 2 here, likely via hot air balloon given the strike. Cheers, Karen On Wed, 1 Oct 2025, Lennart Sorensen wrote:

The wine 2 does. That is a fine point. For example, there is a wine 2 on eBay that I might buy anyway, listed as no contract, but built for Verizon. Hi Scott, What is feeding my choice here is firm information that the specific accessibility features I require are present. I have for example, one lg model with none of them, and the lg model I currently use, and they are in the same series family. What is a red flag for me here is the missing references to things like tts, and the strong focus on bluetooth. Thanks for being detailed though! Karen On Mon, 29 Sep 2025, Scott Allen wrote:
