(off topic) Water heater recommendation
Hi all, My water heater started to leak this weekend, so I'm shopping for water heater. From your experience, which brand is better? - Rheem brand at Home Depot, or - Giant brand at Rona
I can't give you a recommendation, but last year my water heater suddenly gave out and partially flooded my basement. No warning. You might want to do this replacement sooner than later, or prepare for this in advance. A wet/dry vac was very useful for cleanup. I have a GSW from Enbridge. Luckly for me, it's not flooding, but it's continuous enough to be more than dripping. I was doing laundry. I heard "pop" sound when washer stopped the water, then I heard another "pop" sound from the water heater. Before long, my feet were wet. On 2026-03-01 23:15, Don Tai wrote:

From your experience, which brand is better? - Rheem brand at Home Depot, or - Giant brand at Rona The first question would be is it gas or electric? If it is electric then just about either should do you since there is not much in there other than a heating coil and a temprature sensor.
If It is gas then your looking at a professional install and it would likely be best to go with whatever brand the installer sells. If you have time it may be worth looking at a heat pump heater. On demand heaters can be good but as a general rule the gas powered on demand heaters have issues with water temp fluctuations. The electric on demand heaters have better temp control but suck back crazy amounts of electricity(I have one and it can draw 125 amps at 240V). Of course the problem when you have a leaking tank is that you need to replace it NOW and don't get much chance to look at the options. -- Alvin Starr || land: (647)478-6285 Netvel Inc. || home: (905)513-7688 alvin@netvel.net ||

Do you know why? Did your sacrificial anode run out?
Probably no anode. I did regular flushes, and didn't see much in the water. So, never checked anode. For some reason, the anode hole is covered by the insulation, and I would have to dig it out. In hindsight and after reading, I should've checked anode. Very expensive lesson!
