ot: sort of, a Rona store worth a rave?
Hi all, Asking both because it came up in a thread about dyi electronics, and because my Home depot visit was profoundly disappointing..I do not visit Canadian tire. Anyone have a location that they love? large selection, great service? Its firmly in the dyi area, shelf related repairs. one shelf is on my production computer workstation though! Thanks, Kare

Karen, How capable are you, what what tools do you have? You get get shelf hardware from Home Depot and Rona. You can buy bookshelves from Ikea. Cheap bookshelves are made from MDF. Solid wood is a way better material to make shelves out of. Home Depot and Rona and Home Hardware stores like Lakeshore Lumber on Eighth Street can sell you lumber, and pine project panels. I have drawings of a home made bookshelf on my website. The back panel of your home-made bookshelf will be 3/4" thick wooden panel. This is way sturdier than the cardboard used on Ikea shelves, and it puts the centre of mass of your bookshelf closer to the wall, where you want it. -- Howard Gibson hgibson@eol.ca http://home.eol.ca/~hgibson
Howard, Actually, I took industrial arts in school, but that is not the goal here. Instead I am 1, seeking replacement shelve pegs for one where the movers either lost or threw away the correct pegs for the shelves. This must be done in person. And, 2, seek a rather creative brace to hold the pegs and shelf of a damaged bookcase. Do not get me started on the degradation of shopping in IKEA stores. Since the needs are simple, and, at least In one case, I have been managing the workstation shelf for some time,I hope to give an in-store staffer a fun experience. Make sense? This may or may not be relevant. If you are missing pegs for Ikea bookshelves, you can request them from their website and they will send them to you for free!

While I thank you for the idea, neither of these are IKEA items. Actually that was the funny part of my Home depot visit. The staffer handed me pegs that match the ones fro the IKEA bookcases. They are the wrong sort since this is not a bookcase but an older style computer workstation. Cheers, Kare On Sun, 5 Oct 2025, D. Hugh Redelmeier via Talk wrote:

Canadian Tire is out. Home Depot is out. Ikea is out. Online is out. That's a lot of starting disqualifications, considering that the pegs and braces you seek sound like specialized items that require a store with a huge diverse inventory. I'm in no position to judge why, but those limitations may make your search considerably more difficult. I have never failed to find unusual hardware items if looking in both Canadian Tire and Home Depot. What appear to be left are Rona, Home Hardware, and independent hardware stores. I have had very good experiences with the Rona in Barrie Ontario that used to be a Lowes store. It's possible that other Rona stores closer to you may be as helpful, though I find they don't have as much stock as HD or CT. I've also had good experiences with the personal service I received at a Home Hardware, but that was also in Barrie and also much smaller than the hardware big box stores. - Evan On Fri, Oct 3, 2025 at 9:04 PM Karen Lewellen via Talk < talk@lists.gtalug.org> wrote:
