Seeking Recommendations For New Desktop PC -- To Run Debian Linux;

Greetings To GTALUG Members, The desktop PC I built from parts in late 2017 is dying. Looks like the ASRock E97 EXTREME ATX LGA1150 mainboard is failing. I get various mainboard error messages at power on and today got some linux boot panics before a final power on booted the Debian 11 linux live on USB. Looks like ASRock no longer makes the E97 EXTREME ATX LGA1150 mainboard and anyway, since I built this computer in late 2017, it's already seen over 7 years of heavy usage. So I will buy a new one. There is one disk drive in the PC that I will move to the new PC: Western Digital 3.5 inch SATA 2TB. Recommendations for a new desktop PC to run Debian linux booting live from USB port, would be appreciated. Steve Petrie apetrie@aspetrie.net 416-233-6116

Just put one together for myself from parts on sale: MB: 4 NVME slots, PCIe v5 support, on-board HDMI & DP, 2.5G ethernet, 802.11ax WiFi, nice black & silver design: https://www.canadacomputers.com/en/amd-motherboards/251093/msi-x670e-gaming-... CPU: Ryzen 5 9600x - high efficiency, needs no fancy cooling, on-board iGPU: https://www.canadacomputers.com/en/amd-desktop-processors/258318/amd-ryzen-5... Prettiest case I've ever seen, highly "breathable", possibly my favourite part in the list: https://www.canadacomputers.com/en/mid-tower-cases/246257/nzxt-h6-flow-compa... Storage, I didn't buy but it's on my radar - awaiting price drop on PCIe5 NVME: https://www.canadacomputers.com/en/desktop-laptop-internal-ssds/226019/wd-bl...

Note, something I learned from this project: RAM slots can run at, say 6000 MT/s if there are 1 or 2 sticks inserted, but that speed can drop to ~3600 MT/s if 4 sticks are inserted. So, a careful reading of the specs sheet is required, and it's best to buy the desired amount of RAM in pairs (i.e. for 32 GB buy 2x16, not 4x8). Also, was strongly recommended to pay attention to the CL speed (CAS Latency). On those recommendations, I bought 6000 MT/s with CL 30 instead of 6400 MT/s at 32 CL as it is supposed to be more performant. Addendum to previous email, speaking of RAM: https://www.canadacomputers.com/en/desktop-memory/249812/teamgroup-t-force-d...

That seems odd. Why do you want to do that? (You may have explained this before, but I don't remember.) Downsides: USB flash memory sticks are slow and (I think) unreliable compared to NVMe flash drives. This might be something to consider if you are sure: https://forums.redflagdeals.com/amazon-ca-orico-magnetic-portable-ssd-phones...

Steve, I bought my present desktop in 2009. Most of the weird behaviour I see is due to power supplies. My desktop seems to eat them. My desktop is now on its third motherboard and its third computer case. I cannot remember how many power supplies, video cards and hard drives I have replaced. I use BluRay burners has a back-up, so my system consumes those too. My current primary drive is solid state, mounted to an M.2 slot. Compared to thirty years ago, desktops have become way easier to work on. There generally is way more room, and the motherboards are clearly labelled. Replace the offending components. You really ought to re-install GNU/Linux, but my systems always boot and run with the new motherboards. -- Howard Gibson hgibson@eol.ca http://home.eol.ca/~hgibson
