Samsung monitor power supply

I've been given a 24" Samsung monitor. I don't know if it works because it requires a specialized power supply, and that didn't come with. It takes 12-14VDC on a barrel connector - I have laptop power supplies that fit it, but as most of them provide 19v I haven't tried to use them as they'd probably kill it - point being, it appears to be a common connector type. I was wondering if anyone had a spare power supply for this thing lying around that they're willing to give away. Since I don't even know if it works, I'd rather not pay you for it ... Thanks. -- Giles https://www.gilesorr.com/ gilesorr@gmail.com

If you can't find someone with a donation, you can probably find the one you are looking for at Above All Electronics on Bloor St for 5$ or so. I got a micro-pin p/s there last year. I wasn't sure if it was the right one so Steve said, if not bring it back for exchange or refund. Disclaimer I've been shopping there since the mid 90's when they first opened and was a very regular customer for a long time so YMMV. Having said that, Steve is a terrific guy and I've seen him help out lots of people that way and not only his regulars. I was thinking I'd have to use eBay, which I don't want to do. I know of Above All and didn't think of it: an excellent suggestion, thank you. -- Giles https://www.gilesorr.com/ gilesorr@gmail.com

Is Active Surplus still around? They'd typically have that sort of thing. I used to regularly haunt their store on Queen St..

Good thought, but sadly, no. They died the death three or four years ago (maybe longer - I find time compresses in my memory as I get older). Rents on Queen West went astronomical and priced them out. -- Giles https://www.gilesorr.com/ gilesorr@gmail.com

I thought they moved up to Steeles Ave. Did they die there?

Yes. The owners retired and sold up. Graham Greene, former manager, has kept some of it going at SteamLabs and the Science Centre: https://thegorillastore.com/ Stewart

Hey Giles, I have a spare 12V power supply with barell connector for my external hard drive I can lent it to you. If you want to adopt your existing 19v power supply you can get a DC-to-DC buck converter with regulator that takes anything above 12V and converts it to 5v-12v. I think they cost around $3 on aliexpress, but this involves some soldering. Alex. On Wed, Feb 13, 2019, 09:46 Stewart Russell via talk <talk@gtalug.org> wrote:

Actually the mechincal gorilla was stolen from out in front about ten years ago. The owners even put up a no questions asked reward but no luck. I read an article in Now Magazine where the owner said it took a lot of the joy out of operating at that location. That coupled with rising rent prompted the move north. My last purchase there was over 5 years ago. A five foot usb printer cable $3.00. When I couldnt find it browsing on my own, the guy at the desk walked me right to it. Nice friendly people and it was sad to see them go like that

Russell, People can also check out A1 Electronic Parts. They are in an industrial unit at 196 North Queen St., Toronto, Ontario, M9C 4Y1, Tel: (416) 255-0343. Their website is http://www.a1parts.com. I understand they bought a lot of Active Surplus' stock. They are a good source of Arduino boards and Raspberry Pis. -- Howard Gibson hgibson@eol.ca jhowardgibson@gmail.com http://home.eol.ca/~hgibson
