couple of unrelated electronics questions?

As in, not related to each other smiles First, what was the name of the still existing Toronto electronics surplus type store, now that above all electronics is gone? Need to replace the charger for an older apple iPod, and prefer doing this in person to insure it fits. And, on an unrelated note, Any ideas, even if in your closet for a pair of still-connecting-to-a soundblaster-type-soundcard computer speakers? My ideal pair would have a headphone jack too so I could listen late at night without bothering others. all my serious computer stuff is in storage. Willing to make this an amazon or comparative buy, if not from your closet, if I know what I am getting is what I seek. Thoughts oh princes of gear? Karen

There is A-1 Electronic Parts in Etobicoke (near Highway 427 and the Queensway) : https://a1parts.com/ . I'm not sure how to put this nicely, but... in my visits to them I found A-1 to be poorly organized and I thought them over priced. Still they are an option...

Hi Colin! very very very long time no anything. Actually, I may take the IPod and its cable with me to Canada computers, buy those speakers and find a replacement. Thanks for the idea! Karen On Wed, 7 Sep 2022, Colin McGregor wrote:

Charger for an old apple ipod? You might find it on eBay. Even an electronics surplus store may not have such a specific item. There are no surplus electronics stores that I know of in East Toronto. For electronics parts I go to Sayal. Don On Wed, 7 Sept 2022 at 23:28, Karen Lewellen via talk <talk@gtalug.org> wrote:

My goto place has always been Sayal Electronics <https://secure.sayal.com/STORE2/shop.php>, though I have rarely gone lately since I stopped building my own cables. They have a number of locations -- all very large, all very suburban-industrial-zone. Service has always been excellent; while sometimes they're understaffed, the people who are there are very good. Are you looking for electronic components or surplus electronics gear? There are a couple of places for vintage gear. One of them is down the road aways on Gordon Baker Road. For parts, most of the places I used to know are gone: Dominion Electronics (Yonge, S of Wellesley), Arkon Electronics, and Active Surplus. I thought Active had relocated when the Queen St. store shut down but the website doesn't list them open at a new location. There used to be 5 electronics parts stores (mostly for new parts) by Victoria Park and Gordon Baker: Daiwa, Double H, Active, Electrosonic, and Sayal. The only two that may still be in that area are Active (the retail outlet of Future Electronics), and Sayal just a little south of Gordon Baker on the east side. A quick Internet search turned up reference to a place called A1 Parts that is supposed to be at 609 College Street. I haven't heard of them before so I know nothing about them. -- Cheers! Active Surplus has been gone since 2015. It's why The Gorilla Store (run by Graham, the store manager at Active) is at 609 College. (NB: they probably won't have ancient iPod chargers, but they do have cool stuff)

Active Electronics is gone, too. Sayal is the only one left there. Electrosonic (if anything left of it) operates out of New York. Stewart

Charger for which ipod model? -- Len Sorensen

If you're not in a rush, you might just do better to shop at home. Search for "ipod charger" at Aliexpress and there are dozens of entries, most for $4 or less *including shipping*. Most are cables that will work with any USB-A power source. Here's one example <https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005003608173796.html>. They all have photos and their descriptions often say specifically what models they're for. And there's no HST charged for packages this small. The big downside is the shipping time. Expect two month delivery for the economy shipping and one month for the premium options. The "estimated delivery time" presented is a good guideline, but it's usually faster than that. - Evan On Wed, Sep 7, 2022 at 11:29 PM Karen Lewellen via talk <talk@gtalug.org> wrote:

Hi Evan, The IPod prior to say touches, 6 generation and before, did not use a USB cable for power. Instead the cable has a pin structure that reminds me of the ones older Motorola or lg flip phones used, as in the ones in the mid to late 2000's. besides, with a kind nudge, ordering on that site with adaptive technology and command line Linux is not especially feasible. In the time I spend seeking an inclusive door, I can just call somewhere local, walk in with the cable, and get it done. thanks for the ideas tough. Kare On Fri, 9 Sep 2022, Evan Leibovitch wrote:

Hi Karen, The older, post-firewire iPods have a 30-pin dock connector, but most of them came with a dock to USB A cable (the oldest iPods used firewire, and the oldest iPods with a dock connector relied upon a dock to firewire cable for charging). The oldest versions of the dock cables would lock in place and need to be squeezed to release the locking pins, the newer ones removed that locking and changed the strain relief. My 2005 iPod nano came with one of those locking cables. My 2010 iPad came with the newer cable. If you don’t mind going to an Apple Store, they have them available for $25, where they call them “Apple 30-pin to USB Cables”. Jump+ has their store brand Jump+ USB to 30 pin dock connector cables for $20. Seneca

I am sure they do. However, because of often layered accessibility issues, my average for an amazon order is about 4 hours on the phone, sometimes around 3, but rarely less than that. additionally, when you add the shipping costs, I am back to around $20 and am still waiting for days smiles. Hi, This is a good description of the connector, my IPod is either a 6th or 7th generation classic. The cable is one of the newer ones, not requiring the squeeze to be removed. However, part of the cable wire is frayed, and exposed, hence my desire to replace the cable. As I am going to Canada computers in the morning to get the logitech z150 speakers, I am going to take this cable and ask anyway...my desire is swift. If they do not have one though, I can visit an apple store, although I was hoping to spend less than $20 for one. Thanks, Kare On Fri, 9 Sep 2022, Seneca Cunningham wrote:

So that must be the 30 pin apple dock connector. Canada computers does sell those cables by various makers, although as far as I can tell they are not currently in stock at any of their stores. Amazon seems to have them too, although the reviews seem to indicate quite a few are terrible quality, so it may in fact be worth paying the apple price for one. -- Len Sorensen

Well...interestingly enough, one of my housemates had a cable with several charging options, including this pin type.
