Update to the story of the weird RAM. Shortly after Lennart posted this, I hit eBay "one last time" and saw some guy selling 4x8G sticks of the exact Kingston memory out of Quebec for $35/stick (+shipping and HST). He had only listed them a few hours earlier and there was already an "offer" on it. I hit "buy it now", it arrived and has been running stable with the RAM for the past couple days. Thanks for the advice. Less stuff in the landfill. I swear I've been watching ebay on and off for months on this. They might pop up and disappear very quickly. Here's a fun message:
"Crucial currently does not have any compatible upgrades available for your particular system"
Yeah I checked there and I had never ever seen that message before. Wow that is weird ram.
I guess the kingston ram mentioned on the link you had would be the safest bet.
eBay seems to run about $90/module... which, for used, shaky warranty RAM on an older machine, at roughly double the price of modern non-ECC DDR4, really gives me pause for thought.
It's close though I guess and I really don't have time to mess around with new machines.
Thanks for the tips, the Crucial thing is useful for some other projects.
