Or it's by someone who thought it fun to troll the leet haxxor wannabe types.

Arguably there's a learning experience to be had, but in the worst possible way. Just use Gentoo, Slackware, or Arch if compiling software is your thing.

And I'm okay with doing things the hard way just for fun.
