Thanks. I wouldn't know what to buy, what brand is good, etc. That's why I'm paying Teksavvy $10/month. I get ATA; I connect physical phone to ATA; and I connect ATA to router. No configuration. You can get an ATA on amazon for as little as $40 and I am sure if you search Ebay you can find something cheaper. I got a Grandstream ATA recently and they are now at about $90 on Amazon. The upside of an ATA is that you can plug you wireless POTS phone in and keep using it.
I have had mixed luck with SMS and softphones. I have setup voip.ms <http://voip.ms> to forward the messages as email and to my amazement you can reply to the email and a text will be sent back to the sender.
