Karen, How capable are you, what what tools do you have? You get get shelf hardware from Home Depot and Rona. You can buy bookshelves from Ikea. Cheap bookshelves are made from MDF. Solid wood is a way better material to make shelves out of. Home Depot and Rona and Home Hardware stores like Lakeshore Lumber on Eighth Street can sell you lumber, and pine project panels. I have drawings of a home made bookshelf on my website. The back panel of your home-made bookshelf will be 3/4" thick wooden panel.
