You are correct.

Using punctuation in a domain has never been popular and it still isn't, really.
And they're awful for the resale market, speculators hate them.
But those factors are exactly why domains using punctuation are so easy to get if your first choice is taken.
They're fully functional, completely distinct from the non-hyphenated version as far as the DNS is concerned, and web crawlers will index them just as well.
