You can use a USB type web cam with a Pi but you can don't need to. There is a special onboard connector that is meant to be used with a camera module.
With the Desktop usage scenario laid out by Aruna, the short delicate ribbon cable of the camera module would not be a practical choice. Hence my inclusion of a USB webcam in the list. -- Scott Sullivan
