I don't use Gnome since years ago. I use Cinnamon on my personal computer and Xfce on the corporate one, they are very good. I used fluxbox when I had time to fiddle with it. If you're ever inclined to investigate whether GNOME is still "ruined," Fedora provides a pretty pure experience.
